Printer driver

Somehow when I installed Snow Leopard my HP 970 Cxi driver was replaced with the Apple's driver Gutenprint v5.2.3. How do I uninstall that driver and reinstall the HP driver which let's me print on both sides? I've downloaded the HP driver installer but it does not replace the Apple driver when I run the install.

Your help is appreciated,

I wouldn't expect those drivers to be replaced because they aren't from the same source. Instead, I'd expect the new driver to be available to choose as well as the previous ones.

Have you tried adding another printer and choosing the new driver? Or maybe changing the driver for that printer? That can be done in System Preferences, and there's a little question mark button in the panel for more help.

TomSchwab: I have an HP Deskjet 9650 that was supported by Leopard but apparently not Snow Leopard. Is your 9800 working with SL? I'm not concerned about duplexing, just getting it to function as it has for one sided printing. I'm waiting for a support response from HP on this issue though I doubt the news will be good. Any suggestions before I probably go back to Leopard?

Well guys after spending 30 minutes with the Apple experts they told me that what's on the Snow Leopard install disk is what was supplied for my printer - 970 cxi. They suggested I talk with HP to see if the driver they had posted on their site was compatible with 10.6.

After 30 minutes of waiting and talking with their man he finally told me after consulting with his people that the 970 was an old printer and they were not going to support updating new drivers in the future.

So I'm stuck with the generic Gutenprint driver unless a third party comes out with something.

Guess now I have to decide if I'll support HP in the future since they want support me.

If I find out anything else I'll post. Thanks for your help.

Same situation here - installed SL and lost my (very often used) 2 sided printing option on my HP 970. Anyone able to assess the chance the Gutenprint drivers might get an update - after all not everyone wants to runout an buy a new printer every 5 minutes.
As an aside, what happened to environmental friendly - remove double sided printing and thereby double the harmful environmental impact. Trees must be crying...;(
For the time being I still have my trusty power PC IMAC - thank goodness....

That's a good point. Duplex printing is better because it helps use less paper, up to 50% less with an even number of pages. Now if only we could eliminate that other 50%, like maybe use digital documents instead of printing.

That might require helping some people obtain devices to read our documents, either temporarily (borrowing, public, etc.) or permanently (saving up, hand-me-down, gift, etc.). No need to provide 6.8 billion devices, just do so within our circles, just people we want to give the document. It may not be feasible with every document at first, but by trying to do that we will be thinking ahead for the next document and the next. The people we influenced with this real experience will be able to appreciate it firsthand, or maybe not, it depends. For those whom it ends up working out, they'll be natural examples of the possibilities and others can be inspired. After all, that's how we got into having personal printers, it was really convenient for others and it looked like something we could do too.

It's not just paper (which sometimes is made from other fibers than trees) and the waste of not reusing materials. It's much more than that. There's also all of those supposedly disposable ink and toner cartridges that being wasted, and being a continuous expense on anyone maintaing a printer. Not to mention the pollution in the air during printing and from the pages afterwards.

Come to think of it, I'm starting to relate printers with combustion-based automobiles, but so much for the pollution and waste that promote with their use. I'm thinking more along the lines of maintenance. Without ink and paper, the printer is useless. Similar to combustion-based automobiles, supplies get used up and you have go somewhere else to get more supplies, as well as pay for it throughout its lifespan.

Hmm, and similarly, just like electric cars eliminate a lot of the maintenance and supplies needed (no oil, oil filters, spark plugs, brake pads, starter, muffler, etc.), a lot of maintenance and supplies are eliminated by not having a printer. And that translated into saving money!

Forget saving the planet, it's not going anywhere and it'll just end up having something else living on it whose health isn't affected by our waste and pollution. You know, in a thousand years or so. Instead, save your money! It's going everywhere and you may never see it again! Reduce the use of so-called diposables and you reduce your money being disposed.

The pictures of your children in your wallet are getting lonely without the Presidents' pictures to keep them company! Does no one think of the children anymore! Or well, uhm, their pictures at least? Reduce the need for a printer and you increase the livelihood of your poor wallet. Long live the wallet! :-D

I can report the same problem with an HP OfficeJet 7310xi: the drivers supplied by Apple do not permit two-sided printing, and the HP drivers/software are not compatible with 10.6. Ugh. Duplex printing is important to me. Someone (I'd say Apple at this point) should fix this! I've sent feedback to Apple and to HP. I hope others with the same problem will do so as well. Meanwhile, I'm weighing the prospect of reinstalling 10.5. (I have another incompatibility involving a Kensington Bluetooth mouse.)
