Scanning multiple pages with preview and brother MFC-7440n

Hi,

because of some problems with my old scanner after i installed snow leopard, i bought a new compatible one. It's a brother MFC-7440n with apple build-in drivers.

When i start scanning to preview with more than one page, there will be a pdf document for every page. It doesn't matter if i choose "create just one document".

First i wondered because in leopard preview multiple pages are displayed like in snow leopard. But this is wrong. There is one pdf file for every page.

How can i change that issue? When i scan more than one page, i wan't one pdf document with multiple pages, not a pdf per page.

Thanks a lot.

Dominik

I have the same problem with an HP C3180. For some reason the HP scanning software that comes with the scanner no longer recognizes the device, and HP's solution is to use Apple's built-in scanning feature. Unfortunately I can't scan to a multi-page PDF file, and this is something I used all the time.

I hope they fix this soon. I hate when they give us 100 features I'll never use, and take out one I used all the time.

The problem is not the possibility to scan a document. It is also not important what scanner you are using.

If i want to scan 4 pages via the ADF of the scanner, preview is actual NOT able to make a PDF document with four pages. There are 4 PDF documents in one preview windows. It seems like one document with 4 pages, but it isn't.

Apple changed the look of a PDF in preview.

Just try it: Scan 2 or more pages via ADF of your scanner. Safe the document. Close preview an reopen it. Now open your document and you will see only ONE PAGE.

That is my problem. Preview in 10.5.8 was able to do a good job. In Snow Leopard it is not...

I have the same problem but with a HP C4200 series, whilst I dont have the ADF there was a setting in the HP software to let you change the page and then scan the next one into the same document. I have tried all HP's suggestions from their web page but Apple don't seem to think people want to store multiple pages in the same document, in fact by the settings available it seems they only want to support scanning of pictures..... I found a 10.6.1 update but it didnt help.

I have had to go back to 10.5.8 from my backup because I have important documents to scan in to send....

Lets hope they update it soon.

You can make single page .pdf files into a multiple page .pdf files in Preview. Open Preview, and its sidebar. Then drop each page ON TOP of page in the sidebar, then go to File-Save As, and name the new multiple page .pdf.

You can also scan directly from Preview. Open Preview, then go to File- Import From Scanner. It will open up an Image Capture page from which you can scan. No need to open Image Capture.

@Andy:

Thank's for your post. The update 10.6.1 didn't help me, too. The update for brother printer driver did not help, too.

I switched after years of windows to Mac and with 10.5.8 i was very happy for a few month. Now it is a step back and i am very disappointed.

@Peter:

Yes, that's my temporary solution. But in 10.5.x it was easier to scan multiple page pdf and now it is more hand-work for me.

I think this should be fixed by apple. It's just a little think that help me for multiple page pdf and one step less for me.

Hi Dominik,

What about Brother's scanner software? Do they have a scan program you can use to create multiple page documents? I have a Canon, and its software did that. The only other way is how I explained in my previous post. I have no issue using Preview for the simple document scanning I do. But if you have more needs, perhaps the Brother scan program should be installed.

Brother has issued a scanner driver update on 9/10....

Also several other updates:

I think I have found a solution using Preview.app, but it is non-intuitive: You need to scan the first page as PDF and then open the side bar. At this point on the new scans are added to the first document.

Edit: Never mind this was just a illusion. Both documents are indeed added to the side bar, but they aren't really part of the same document. Sorry for the false hope.
