Right click context menu opens then closes quickly in Finder

After my upgrade to Snow Leopard, I now have a problem with Finder. When I right click on something to get the context menu, sometimes, it works fine, and others, the contextual menu shows up for a second then closes. The only way I can select any of those options is to right click and hold, then select. This is getting annoying.

It seems like maybe a corrupt preference? Anyone seen this before or have an idea how to solve it?

I have two Macs that I did clean installs on with 10.6.0. The first is a White Macbook:

Model Name: MacBook
Model Identifier: MacBook3,1
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
Processor Speed: 2.2 GHz
Number Of Processors: 1
Total Number Of Cores: 2
L2 Cache: 4 MB
Memory: 4 GB
Bus Speed: 800 MHz
Boot ROM Version: MB31.008E.B02
SMC Version (system): 1.24f2
Serial Number (system): W88071RJZ63
Hardware UUID: D8D756FD-DEB9-5272-9BA5-A23F9BEAD63D
Sudden Motion Sensor:
State: Enabled

The second is an iMac:

Model Name: iMac
Model Identifier: iMac7,1
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
Processor Speed: 2 GHz
Number Of Processors: 1
Total Number Of Cores: 2
L2 Cache: 4 MB
Memory: 4 GB
Bus Speed: 800 MHz
Boot ROM Version: IM71.007A.B03
SMC Version (system): 1.20f4
Serial Number (system): W8741F98X85
Hardware UUID: 00000000-0000-1000-8000-001B63A95BE1

I performed the exact same process on both of these computers - reformatting the hard drives and performing fresh installations of 10.6.0. The Macbook immediately started having the intermittent problem described in this thread, whereas the iMac has not displayed this problem at all. The update to 10.6.1 resulted in no change regarding this issue.

I'm having this issue as well. I've done a clean install of snow leopard and the problem remains.

I'm using a logitech VX nano.

The machine is a is 2009 unibody macbook pro -

Model Name: MacBook Pro
Model Identifier: MacBookPro5,4
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
Processor Speed: 2.53 GHz
Number Of Processors: 1
Total Number Of Cores: 2
L2 Cache: 3 MB
Memory: 4 GB
Bus Speed: 1.07 GHz
Boot ROM Version: MBP53.00AC.B03

I'm pretty close to wiping SL and replacing it with Windows 7. Sick of Apple ignoring these issues.

Interesting issue. I don't see it with a 24" iMac and no one brought it up while beta-testing the cat for almost a year. Complaining here does nothing. File bug reports with Apple. To do that, join the Apple Developer Connection (ADC)—it's free and available for all Mac users and gets you a look at some development software. Since you already have an Apple username/ID, use that. Once a member, go to Apple BugReporter and file your bug report or enhancement request. You could also send Feedback, but that usually goes through support and marketing, although when it'll get to engineering is anyone's guess. The nice thing with using the Bug Reporter system over submitting feedback is that you get a response and a follow-up number; thus, starting a dialog with engineering. Note, that if they tell you it's a duplicate or known issue, the more reports, the higher up the priority list it moves.

Thanks for the info on bug reporting. I posted the following:

Summary:

Mouse right clicking to activate that context menu has erratic behaviour. The context menu will often flicker, or will activate and then de-activate in one click, making it awkward to select menu items. This problem has been reported by many users using Snow Leopard 10.6, 10.6.1 & 10.6.2. This has mostly been noticed on 2008/2009 macbooks & macbook pro unibodies. It may take a few attempts, but the problem will become apparent. Although it may be thought that this is not a serious issue, it's slows productivity quite considerably and makes the usability experience less than appealing. This problem has also been shown to exist with a number of different types of mouse models.

Steps to Reproduce:

Single Right click on the Desktop to activate the context menu.

Expected Results:

The context menu will be displayed, and menu items will be selectable.

Actual Results:

The context menu displays for less than a second, then closes, making it impossible to select menu items.

Regression:

It's been seen in 10.6 & above.

Notes:

Switching the primary mouse button under system preferences from left to right, resolves the problem whilst under this configuration. However when switching back from right to left, the problem is persistent again.

See this being reported by users under the following thread on the Apple forums - http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2135663&start=0&tstart=0
