Right click context menu opens then closes quickly in Finder
After my upgrade to Snow Leopard, I now have a problem with Finder. When I right click on something to get the context menu, sometimes, it works fine, and others, the contextual menu shows up for a second then closes. The only way I can select any of those options is to right click and hold, then select. This is getting annoying.
It seems like maybe a corrupt preference? Anyone seen this before or have an idea how to solve it?
Thanks for the info on submitting a bug report, I too have sent mine in now and referenced this thread.
It is now also happening on my MacPro Dual 2.8 Quad Core.
The Contextual menu will work properly unless I have a word selected for spell checking then the menu opens and closes quickly as we have been talking about.
I have also filed a bug report and am waiting to hear back from apple.
I feel I have been very patient up till now, but it seems that apple has completely ignored this problem, and it has now become very annoying. I hope they fix it soon.
If anyone still has this problem could you please also state which mouse you're using? I'm only having the problem using a logitech mouse. I've tried a mighty mouse and ms mouse, both of which don't appear to result in the same problem.
I still have this problem. I've tried *mighty mouse* and *other non-Apple mouse*. In my local Apple Store they tested my Mac mini with *every mouse available in store*. Problem still occurs and I know of no solution (my local store likewise)
The bug that i raised for this issue has been closed by apple as a duplicate to another bug. They've stated that this is a 'known issue' but haven't provided any possible workarounds or when it's likely to be fixed. Sorry everyone, i can't be much more help than that. The problem as little as it seems is very annoying but what can you do...
I had this problem ever since I upgraded to Snow Leopard on my late 2008 MacBook Aluminium. I tried hard to solve this problem. I installed a fresh copy of OS 10.6 on a spare hard disk and experimented with it. In the end, I traced the problem to a specific hard drive. I had a problem free drive with all my user settings and files on a 320Gb Western Digital. No matter how long I used this drive, the right click problem never appeared. As soon as I made an image copy of this drive using the disk utility to a 500Gb Seagate, and used this drive, the problem appeared within 24 to 48 hours, and once it appeared, it was impossible to get rid of it. I repeated this at least 3 times and copied the contents of the problem free WD 320 drive to the 500 Gb seagate and the problem returned within a short period of the time consistently. So, I started to get suspicious about the drive and I bought a Samsung 500Gb drive and copied the contents of the problem free WD drive to the Samsung to experiment. It has been more than a week and the problem is gone. I simply do not understand how a particular brand of drive can cause this problem. My 320 Gb WD has 8Mb cache, so does the 500Gb Samsung and the 500Gb Seagate. All I know is that as soon as I use the 500 Gb Seagate, the right click problem returns within a day or two. This also explains why AdamSimo's problem disappeared when they changed his hard drive. By the way, I also have a 2009 model 2.4 Ghz 15" MacBook pro, a late 2009 Mac Mini 2.0 and a 2008 iMac all using 10.6.2 and none of them exhibits the right click problem. All I can recommend is: get another disk like I did, install Snow Leopard on it, transfer your files using the Migration Assistant to this drive and use it for a few days to make sure that it is problem free. I had problems with Seagate, so make sure you choose another brand.
Well I can officially say that 10.6.3 has not fixed this problem on either of the two Intel machines that I have. 10.6.3 also has not solved the problem of getting a spinning ball with mac Mail. Very frustrating.
