Chat window stays open even after i log off

Hi,

In Leopard you could set iChat 4 to "Remember Open Chats across launch"

This has been replaced in iChat 5 by and option to Display a certian number of Previous Chats if you have Save Transcripts turned On.

Go to the iChat Menu > Preferences > Messages and deselect the "In New Chat Window, Show ..." option.

The Option for None is to turn it Off by deselecting the Sub Item of Save Transcripts (the In New Chat Windows, Show and the Drop down)

Please, if posting Logs, do not post any Log info after the line "Binary Images for iChat"

Im having the same problem. Its really getting me mad, I don't want the windows to come back when I start it up again. Please come out with a fix SOON

HI,

Perhaps the iChat preference file is corrupted.

Locate this file. com.apple.iChat.plist

/Users/YourName/Library/Preferences. Drag that file from the Preferences folder to the Trash, empty the Trash and restart your Mac.

Try this...

/Users/YourName/Library. Open the Caches folder.

Click the discovery triangle next to com.apple.iChat

Click the URLCache triangle. Drag the Cache.db file to the Trash, empty the Trash and restart your Mac.

This is the same stuff that I posted about earlier today. I really dislike the new way that iChat handles transcripts and current chats when quitting the application.

Nope, I'm almost certain that its ichat 5. There is no option in the config like there was in 4.

I must admit I would have suggested that as well.
If the iChat 4 setting for Remembering Chats had been set there is nothing in iChat 5 to reset it.

In Theory clearing the window and Quitting iChat should delete the item from the .plist
Deleting the said .plist and restarting iChat would have caused iChat to recreate the .plist from Defaults and the Remember Chats Across Launch item would not be there.

What we could do with knowing now is, does the Window have any info at the top as to who and/or what room the chat is associated with ?

It may pay to check the File Menu of iChat to Check if this "Chat" that keeps popping up is in the Recents lists.

I don't think it has anything to do with the chat windows, its ichat. There use to be an option in the preferences that had this exact use. but now it is gone.

iChat controls the Chat windows it displays.

I have explained the scenario where I think the previous iChat 4 setting may not be getting over written properly and what I would expect to to resolve this.

Without knowing if the window has any identifying info at the top it is a little difficult to say more.

However if it identified as a Chat with (name) and deleting the .plist does not work I would check the File Menu for the Recent items and see if you can delete the files from the Saved Transcripts folder.

I don't think that its the problem with ichat 4 because i did a fresh install of snow leopard and reformatted the drive before i installed it. Also I know this because my friends have the same problem.

I can confirm I'm seeing this behavior as well. I did a clean install of Snow Leopard. The item RememberOpenChats no longer exists within the plist. If I add it and set it to false, it does nothing.

It always opens chats that were open the last time it was quit, with their user names at the top, etc. I have save chat transcripts disabled. I have trashed the plist, and the behavior does not change. It's kind of silly to have to close multiple blank chats every time I launch iChat.
