Spontaneous logout while in Snow Leopard

I am having spontaneous logouts while I am in Snow Leopard. This is happening a couple times a day and it is very annoying. When it logs out it instantly goes to a blue screen and then the login screen appears. When I log back in all my apps have quit and it is like I am logging in for the first time. I did have this happen in Leopard too, but very rarely.

Here are some facts that may help:

MacBookPro5,1
Bluetooth on : apple mouse, keyboard
Network, wired ethernet
Connected to external monitor via mini display port.
All software patches up to date.

Anybody else experience this problem? Any suggestions.

MacBookPro5,1, Mac OS X (10.6), 4 GB memory

I've just suffered the same problem (spontaneous logout) and found this thread looking for an answer. I see in my logs that WindowServer had crashed, but, in line with others observations, I was using a Rosetta application at the time (Canvas X). It abruptly froze mid-operation, sat like that for a moment, then the whole screen went blue (as it does on shut-down or logout) and the login dialog appeared. All my open apps were terminated and I lost all my unsaved work - a very serious blow.

I notice I hadn't updated my Mac specs - I'm actually running Mac OS 10.6.1 with 4GB RAM. I never encountered this problem until the update to Snow Leopard. If anyone at Apple is looking into this, I installed Rosetta at the same time as 10.6 (from the DVD).

Since my last post, this has happened again within minutes of starting work. This could be a serious setback if it isn't resolved quickly.

I'm having the same issue. Like others have mentioned, I do notice it happen more while using Rosetta (PPC) applications, and it happens on random keystrokes (like pressing Apple+anything). I'm also using an external display and since installing Snow Leopard my screen flickers weird colors from time to time. Not sure if that's related.

Anyway I've filed a bug report and hope this issue gets resolved in a Software Update quickly. It's frustrating to be randomly logged out in the middle of unsaved work, like someone pulled the plug on the computer. Good luck to everyone else.

The other strange thing I am seeing is that after the bluescreen crash back to the login screen, the playback window in Final Cut Pro is still there visible superimposed over the login screen (upper left corner), and showing the last scene I was working on, but the playback window is flashing rapidly ... but then at least I was able to edit for about twenty minutes before this latest crash occurred ...

Having spontaneous logouts while using Final Cut Pro v 5.0.4 usually while trying to use Command-S to save the latest changes. Intel quad Mac Pro with 3GB RAM. Just installed Snow Leopard over Tiger using the Mac Boxed Set. MS-Office 2008 works okay so far. Have only seen the spontaneous logout in FCP. Any fix pending?

Well, my hopes were dashed when using InDesign CS the other night and experiencing the spontaneous logout. I was at home, so no external monitor, no MS keyboard or mouse (though the drivers are installed.)

I have noticed graphics anomalies particularly when in dual monitor mode (24" HPw2408h via RGB), when I log out of an account, it clears the external monitor in 50x50px blocks scanning across and down. It happens quickly, but it's noticeable that it's not just the desktop pattern going away like on the main screen.

I have also noticed that BBEdit seems to take a very long time to open a lot of plain text documents. It's not only ones on mounted shares, but local ones as well. It will draw the window in and spin for a minute or more before filling in the content. This happens both at home and work, though not every time, often enough to be really annoying.

It's been too long to easily roll back to 10.5.8... guess I have to stick it out until the fixes materialize. It's not intolerable, but it's not the Mac performance I've always enjoyed either.

I just experienced the same odd behaviour for the first time when writing a text in Word 2004. Excel was not open, no external monitor attached - I never used one on that machine - and no bluetooth devices connected. I am not 100 percent certain, but I do not think I even issued a command (Apple-something), when it happened, I just typed text.

I have filed a bug report as suggested, and hope that our efforts will bring a result.

I called AppleCare about this, since it is happening on two covered machines. Apple told me that it was my software that is not compatible with Rosetta. I'm running Office 2004, with the very latest updates, FMPro 7, QuickMail 3.5.3; and a 4D timing program called Brief Encounters. I can run several of these, or any one at a time and get the same results... that is ANY of the Office apps (Word, PowerPoint, Excel), or any one of the others. So what Apple is telling me is that ALL of my PPC software is incompatible with Rosetta. Oh Yeah? To that, I say, nice try, but what a TOTALLY chicken sh** response.

I am going back to Leopard for now on both machines that Snow Leopard is installed on, and making sure that I post everywhere this problem is mentioned. The response from Apple is very much a Microsoft kind of response,... after so many years of dealing with them, I was expecting MUCH more. Until I hear from Apple or from someone else that this problem is solved or at least solvable, I intend to never install Snow Leopard again. I feel VERY sorry for those buying new hardware that are stuck with this obviously flawed OS.

P.S. The problem always occurs when I am editing text in any of the programs listed.
