Time Machine Backup Hangs at "Calculating Changes"

Since upgrading to SL, I am unable to backup. I am using a WD MyBook HD linked to a TC for backing up my MacBook Pro 13" UB. Prior to upgrading all was operating normally.

The process hangs at "Calculating changes 99%" . It will not progress beyond that point. I have to manually stop the backup.

Here is the log:

Any suggestions?

Send your email address to protagonistic@mac.com and I will do that if it happens again. It is a pretty rare occurrence, but I have had it happen twice since I got this new iMac. My friend was able to get out of it the first time by unplugging the external drive, a solution I really don't like to use. He has had the problem occur three times now. The first time it happened to me it also took down my whole system. The second time I did mange to force it to shut down.

I believe I clearly stated in my original post that this was my opinion. I appreciate your responding but you seem to have taken offense where none was intended. Could I be wrong in my assessment?

You took offense to my recommendation to do a Repair Disk, so I followed suit.

Yes, but the facts as I stated them would seem to indicate I am not. I was merely posting because others seem to be having a similar problem. If enough people having the problem respond it might be possible to establish a common thread here.

Several folks have had this symptom, but for different reasons. Many have fixed it with one solution or another earlier in this thread (which is marked "Answered," by the way).

Again, if you have taken offense where none was intended I apologize. I was merely trying to let you know I have been working with computers longer than most people have. (Think vacuum tubes).

So have I. One thing I've learned in 50 years of it is, what looks like one thing may be another (you probably know where the term "bug" came from, don't you?)

In my opinion I think this is some kind of a software glitch but that has not ruled out my pursuing the possibility of HW. It is just that at this point it seems to be more likely a software problem. I have a feeling that with one of the upcoming SL upgrades the problem will disappear. Anyway, thanks again for the initial response and have a nice day.

If you've tried all the things in #D2 of the Troubleshooting Tip, then you've exhausted the list of things that have helped several others with this and similar symptoms. A few folks who tried all those have fixed this sort of thing by loading the "combo" update, and in one or two, reinstalling Snow Leopard.

All I'm saying is, until you've tried all the things that helped others, it's not reasonable to assume it's a general problem with OSX. But if it is, nobody here can help. You need to contact Apple.

Perhaps not the same problem originally reported in this thread, but apropos of the title...

I was experiencing very frequent TIme Machine seizures, hung at "Calculating Changes" (with no percentage). This would gradually cause Mail and other applications, eventually Finder to seize up one by one. Interestingly, once the seizure started I could start Terminal but "top -u" did not work - cleared the page but displayed nothing. The only way out was a hard reset.

You may note that I speak in the past tense. After trying all manner of joyless voodoo I discovered that turning off Spotlight made the problem go away (at the cost of not being able to search in Mail, etc.) This led me to the aha moment. It turned out that I had Time Machine backing up an entire volume on which Spotlight was excluding one large top level directory. That is, the scope of Time Machine was larger than that of Spotlight. I made them match and now all is well for a week or so.
