Airport has self-assigned IP address

Hey all,

I just had my motherboard replaced in my Macbook Pro. Since getting the laptop back I can no longer connect to my internet. When I check my network settings I see the following message attributed to my wifi connection

"Airport has self-assigned IP address and may not be able to connect to the internet"

When I then go into the TCP/IP panel I see DHCP is enabled but I have a weird address of 169.x.x.x (can't remember it exactly). God knows where that's coming from.

I tried renewing the DHCP lease. Rebooting my modem and router. Disabling and re-enabling the airport - all to no avail. At the moment the only way I can connect is to use a wired connection and set the IP address manually and also set the DNS to be my router's address.

Anyone got any ideas what the heck could be causing this?

I've had this issue periodically - once after a hard drive upgrade, most recently today when I inadvertently let the battery run all the way down and my Powerbook shut itself down at some point. Start it up at work and get the "self-assigned IP address" message in my Network setting pref pane. One way or another, I've always managed to get things going again, re-entering DNS info once, re-starting the machine another time, renewing my DHCP lease another time. This time, changing my firewall settings worked straightaway - thanks for the tip!

have been stuck in a hotel for a few days, and can't fathom how to fix this issue. There's no option to reboot the router, and so I am a bit stuck.

All the options are just simply not working for me, i disable / re-enable firewall. I deleted all the relevant optoins under library. It is amazing how long this issue has been out in the ether due to the sheer amount of results on google. Alas, nothing seems to fix this.

My iphone is connected to the wifi spot - as is my works laptop (that I am currently typing on).

Just doesn't seem to add up.

This is SUCH a prevalent issue that I think Apple needs to address it before they scare off potential customers, and annoy the heck out of us loyal users. This behavior has happened on 3 different laptops since August. No problems with all the PCs on the server; just the Mac, so I have narrowed it down to the laptop since I have already done the modem reset, etc.
WHAT WORKED FOR ME:
I went into the System Preferences ->Network
and DELETED my Airport prefs (little window on the left) then added it back, and then went to Assist me (on the bottom) and re-entered my password to connect to the network, and voila! She lives!
I would be VERY interested to hear if this works for ANYone; if we can establish a re-occurring issue, then maybe Apple will finally address it.
Peace out.

I agree with everyones frustration on this. Apple is too good to ignore this much longer.

Anyway, I had this dreaded problem yesterday and this morning. Just like others, I appeared to be connected to my router, but could not connect to the web or get mail, outbound ping, etc. Finally got it fixed (or at least to work). Note: I've had a similar problem with past PCs over the years. The only thing seemed to work there was a system restore. But I digress.

I went through what others suggested deleting the airport and ethernet entries in system preferences (also deleted my home network entry in preferred networks). This might have helped but in itself still did not allow me to connect to the web.

Finally, I got it to work following these steps:
1. Connected via ethernet cable (which connected fine - web access and everything).
2. disabled airport again.
3. Surfed the web for a while (including this site - 10 min or so).
4. Shutdown the mac.
5. Disconnected ethernet.
6. Rebooted.
7. Enabled airport.
8. Used Assist Me to search and connect to my router/network.
This time it worked fine.

In conclusion, like my past PC trials, I think that somehow the IP addressing (via wireless) gets corrupt (or something like this) and the only way the Mac (or PC for that matter) can flush this out is to connect to another network (thereby somehow flushing out the bad settings). As is obvious - I am NOT an IT pro so this is merely my layperson's take on what is happening. But perhaps I'm onto something. To the Apple folks: It seems clear that the issue is related to wireless. Maybe a "flushing mechanism" in the diagnostics routines could do it.

Of course, if you're one of those that cannot connect via hardwire this solution will not work for you. Perhaps going to the nearest Starbucks - connecting and then deleting the old connections as I did would work.

Hope his helps someone else.
