Snow Leopard- Final Cut 5.1 HDV Capture

I just installed Snow Leopard, and since I did, I haven't been able to capture HDV footage from my Canon XL H1. Up until the upgrade, I didn't have any issues. Any ideas on a cause or a fix? Thanks!

I have figured out that I can do Standard Def from the camera straight to Quicktime, but no HD like I was able to do before in Leopard and the prior version of Quicktime. This is a downgrade I was not expecting. One cannot install the prior version of Quicktime as well which *****.... I guess I will need to see how to stream into Final Cut Express if possible and use that. Anyone do that? If so How?

I brought home a Tiger machine, 10.4.11 running FCP 5.1.4
The log and capture with my Canon Vixia HV30 in HD worked just fine. I am importing my 3rd tape right now. There was not a hitch, it immediately recognized the camera and imported without issues.

Hmmm, so, in my situation it appears to be SL issue with FCP 5.1.4, at least some connection there, maybe a quicktime thing? Not sure.

While I am *very angry* at Apple (what a shockingly bad release, were you all sleeping or something?) for not testing a major O.S before release, I have found a work-around for anyone who (like me) is knackered if you can't capture.

Start iMovie, wait for it to spawn its own capture window when you switch on your player/camera.
Close this window and then:

In (FCP) capture settings, select non-controllable devices.
No idea if this works for others of you, but I'm trying to share what I found.
There must be a way to fix this by Apple, if I can hack it by mistake a patch must be possible.

*I am disgusted and disappointed in you Apple for not testing SL properly*, we all expect so much more of you, but FCP is much better than anything I can use on a Windows machine.

Having used canon equipment with Final Cut Pro for 9 years, without a single compatibility issue with Final Cut Pro 1, 3, 5, and 6, on all versions of OSX (but always the correct OS for the FCP version) - I can only conclude that these so-called connectivity issues are user error, or at best the result of improperly configured systems or faulty OS installations.

Having the same issue, with workaround.

Environment: Identical FCP 5.1.4 on two separate computers, one with Snow Leopard (including Quicktime 10) and one with just plain Leopard. FCP using "Easy Setups" for HDV- 1080i60, and HDV- 1080i60 Basic. (Plus I tried all the other variants.)
Camera: Canon XH A1. Same camera used on both computers. 30FPS. 1080i60 HD video. Camera output settings as specified earlier in this thread.

Results: On the Snow Leopard machine, no matter what combination of settings, FCP won't recognize camera. This includes restarting camera and computer between each step.
On the Leopard machine, no problem, works like a charm with the settings specified earlier in this conversation.

Workaround: On the Snow Leopard machine, iMovie 09 captured HD video just fine. Problem is obviously with FCP/Snow Leopard/QT10. Imported captured video from Finder into FCP and continued my project. I guess I'll use iMovie for my HD captures instead of FCP HD. ⚠

I hope this helps someone else. Maybe Apple support too.

Same for me - was running FCP 6 / Leopard on a Macbook Pro and using a Canon XHA1 and then as soon as Snow Leopard installed I couldn't import HDV using FCP.

Camera shows up in devices and it captures fine in Adobe Premiere.

I haven't changed anything (other than OS)... so unless FCP needs to be reinstalled, or there is some patch, or some other solution, I have no idea how to fix it. I've also seen a number of comments about Canon equipment not working well with FCP, but never experienced any problems until now.

Thanks for the above iMovie workaround, I'll give it a shot. Hopefully something comes out to address this.

That's a pretty flip and senseless reply. I have nothing but Canon HD cameras, and use the XH-A1 extensively. It's a great camera. And until I loaded this crappy piece of unfinished (Snow Leopard) software on my Mac Pro, I never had a problem with XH-A1 to FCP connection. Now it simply DOES NOT work!

ONe of our Brit friends gave the only workable solution in this very thread. You have to capture the XH output in iMovie and then import the files into FCP. A completely time-wasting workaround.

Don't know if you work for Apple, but sounds like you do. You can tell the developers that they completely BLEW it with this worthless SL OS...or maybe we should nickname it SLOP. All you have to do is jump into dozens of forums talking about this SL/FCP problem to know it's not in someones imagination or lack of expertise. IT"S a REAL SL problem, and Apple developers should be ashamed!

THANK YOU...THANK YOU...THANK YOU! I've been troubleshooting this XH-A1 to FCP 5.1.4 running on Snot Leopard for six hours today, and yours is the only solution that really works. COngrats! Simple yet effective.

I'm forever thankful. This issue is definitely a Snot Leopard problem, and Apple is hiding from it. Otherwise, they'd have somebody out here telling us that they're sorry and they have someone locked up in a room in Cupertino working on an imminent solution.

If you can't tell I'M VERY ANGRY ABOUT THIS tonight. It's been a very long and wasted day thanks to SL.
