10.6 and Xerox Phaser 6100 Compatibility

It appears that a 10.6 capable print driver is unavailable for the Xerox Phaser 6100 (USB only). Can anyone suggest a workaround?

kb20,

I'd suggest going to support.xerox.com and downloading the 6100 OS X driver and reinstalling. This isn't an "official" 10.6 Snow Leopard driver, but should install. Once installed try the following:

1) Navigate to Applications > Utilities and open a Terminal window.
2) Type the following command: sudo chown root:admin /usr/libexec/cups/filter/rastertophaser6100
3) You will be prompted to enter your password.

After that you should be able to print. I tested a few 32 bit apps and a few 64 bit apps, it looks like it's all working, but let me know if there are problems.

After installing the Xerox 6110 printer drivers, I could not find the directory:
/usr/libexec/cups/filter/rastertophaser6100 on my computer.

However, there is another directory that was created:
/Library/Printers/Xerox/Phaser6110

I changed the owner on Phaser6110 to root:admin and now I am getting the error:
/Library/Printers/Xerox/Phaser6110/ratertoxrx failed

Any idea?

That ownership is not likely to work. The proper command should be

<pre style="overflow: auto;font-size:small; font-family: Monaco, 'Courier New', Courier, monospace; color: #222; background: #ddd; padding: .3em .8em .3em .8em; font-size: 9px;">sudo chown root:wheel /usr/libexec/cups/filter/rastertophaser6100</pre>

You will also need to make sure that you have installed Rosetta. The filter rastertophaser6100 is a ppc only binary and will require Rosetta to function.

Matt, thanks for the comment, you are correct I do have rosetta installed prior to my testing, good catch. The root:admin permissions do in fact work, however, I think your suggestion is better to set to root:wheel which matches the rest of the contents of the usr/libexec/cups/filter directory.

To dhelmy, I don't have a 6110 printer to test with, the comments above apply to the Phaser 6100 specifically. I'll try to play with the 6110 driver and figure out how to make it work and post back.

dhelmy,

I downloaded the 6110 driver from support.xerox.com and installed, and it created a Phaser6110 directory at /Library/Printers/Xerox/Phaser6110. I then set the permissions for the Xerox directory using the following:

1) Navigate to Applications > Utilities and open a Terminal window.
2) Type the following command: sudo chown -R root:admin /Library/Printers/Xerox
3) You will be prompted to enter your password.

The permissions should now be set appropriately for the all the contents of the Xerox directory, including the Phaser6110 location. I was able to print successfully with no errors after that (previously I was seeing the "your printer is not installed correctly" error others have outlined in various threads over the last few days.) Let me know if this works for you.

kdraz,

Thank you for your advise. However, these steps are the ones already tried and I am getting the following error:
/Library/Printers/Xerox/Phaser6110/rastertoxrx failed

On the console windows, the system posted the following log:
September 5 Saturday - Sep 5, 2009 - 7:00:45 AM com.apple.ReportCrash.Root[9269] 2009-09-05 07:00:45.926 ReportCrash[9269:2903] Saved crash report for rastertoxrx[9265] version ??? (???) to /Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports/rastertoxrx 2009-09-05-070045localhost.crash

That log in turn is very long and has the following heading:
Process: rastertoxrx [9265]
Path: /usr/libexec/oah/RosettaNonGrata
Identifier: rastertoxrx
Version: ??? (???)
Code Type: PPC (Translated)
Parent Process: cupsd [8636]

Date/Time: 2009-09-05 07:00:45.737 -0400
OS Version: Mac OS X 10.6 (10A432)
Report Version: 6
....

Any thoughts?

I have a similar problem: I updated from 10.5 to 10.6 and I can't get my Xerox Phaser 6110MFP working.

I tried each suggestion in this post, installed and reinstalled drivers, changed permissions, restarted my computer... but I can't get my printer working.

I don't have any /usr/libexec/cups/filter/rastertophaser6100 or similar filename.

When I print something I see this error:

Stampante pronta
Il software della stampante non è stato installato correttamente. Reinstallalo o contatta il produttore per ottenere assistenza.

Printer is ready
Software is not installed correctly. Reinstall or contact support to get assistance.

I found out what the problem was. Xerox have their drivers written for PowerPC and not Intel.
This required that rosetta be installed on snow leopard. Since this is an optional install, it was not available on my machine.

Here is what I've done:
- insert the snow leopard install DVD
- select optional package
- select rosetta only from the list of optional packages
- click install and follow instructions to complete installation
- did NOT reboot

now the printer works.

Hi guys, I have a 6110 MFP and it's not working since 10.6 upgrade, neither via USB nor via Time Capsule. I have tried both resetting permission and installing Rosetta but printer is still not working.

The same problem but no chance of working... 😟
- Installed Rosetta
- Resetting Printing System
- Uninstalled Xerox Driver
- Installed Xerox Driver
- sudo chown ...

Nothing... always the same error:
""
Printer Ready
The printer software was installed incorrectly. Please reinstall the printer’s software or contact the manufacturer for assistance.
""

any ideas?

Update: After 5 "Resetting Printing System" and 5 "New Installing the printer" (without removing the driver) the printer is now working... 😐
