ClearWire/ Motorola USB modem for WiMax not working after upgrade

I upgraded to 10.6 yesterday and, overall, things went smoothly. However, my WiMax USB modem from ClearWire is no longer recognized by my MBP. Now, what's really interesting is that my partner has a black Macbook which does recognize the same modem. Her machine is about 3 months newer than mine but they are both early 2008 models. I'm thinking about doing a clean install (instead of the in situ upgrade) but I'm loath to do so. Has anyone been able to get ClearWire WiMax working? The modem itself is a Motorola USBw 25100.

Cheers
Adrienne

The answer to this is to get on to Clear. In fact, I'm ready to cancel Clear, and just keep telling them I'm going to cancel because it's useless for Mac users. Their coverage being bad is one thing, but this is unacceptable.

If anyone gets the direct number or email address to someone high up, post it. There are a lot of mac users, let's unite. Otherwise, I'm outta here.

I just got one of these today and it's working fine with 10.6.2. However, it was not that simple to set up as I first had to download the software from the web site which would have been difficult if I didn't have another Internet connection available (which might have been the case if I was planning to use the service as my sole ISP). It's a bit annoying as one of the reasons I ordered it was because it said Mac OS X was supported yet when I opened the box I found there was absolutely no mention of Mac anywhere (not on the box, not in the product literature and certainly not in the files on the USB key with Windows XP driver software).

I didn't do anything special to get it working other than installing the software found at https://www.clear.com/support/download
I am using version 1.03.1031.0 from November 4th.

Are you sure the device is not powering on? If so, either the unit is defective or your USB port is not providing it with enough power (this is less likely and if it were the case you would probably get an error message indicating that it needs more power than is available on the port it is plugged into). No lights may not actually indicate that it is not powering up as my observation was that no lights came on until the Clear Connection Manager application started and then there was a solid red light while it was finding and connecting to the network and a green light (which eventually went off and blinked intermittently) once it was connected. If the device is plugged in and powered on, you should be able to see a USBw25100 device in the USB device tree in System Profiler.

Well, I double checked, and sure enough:

1. The USB ports are both just fine, other devices work great.
2. Reinstalled the software, nothing.
3. the USB dongle from Clear works just fine in other laptops running Windows, and works fine with my Clear Spot.
4. the USB dongle even powers up on my Dell 10v running 10.6.1 but does not find any networks.

I can assure you that there is something messed up with the new drivers. Mine powers up but it keeps disconnecting and connecting. Again this same story as Optical Serenity, works fine in VM Fusion 3 and it worked fine in 10.5.8. No luck with 10.6.1 or 10.6.2. The only thing I can think of that there must be a conflict with some software but besides VM Fusion 3 and Little Snitch I am not running anything special.

I can also confirm that I am having the exact same issue. My modem is recognized by the system and even shows up in the System Profiler. The LED on the device remains red while the connection manager cycles between "Searching for Network" and "Disconnected".

Personally, I find it absolutely ridiculous that a company the size of CLEAR can't patch a simple bug.

My guess is also that it is conflicting with another driver, but there is no way for me to begin to determine which one.

Same issue here. Motorola USB modem suddenly won't find network on 2 laptops. One running 10.5.8, and one on 10.6.2.

I spoke with clear today and although they won't acknowledge the problem, they have to know about it. They sold me a home modem for just $20 (usually $80) and gave me $7.50 account credit to boot. I'll use the home modem until they update the connection manager software for the USB modem. Another option would be to get one of the Clear branded Cradlepoint 300 wifi hot spots for the USB modem.

Hopefully they'll get the OSX drivers updated soon.
