Startup Sound gone forever?

It's funny how you sometimes only miss things once they're gone forever... I've been using the 3rd-party "Startup Sound preference panel" to disable or lower the volume of my iMac's startup sound.

Now, under Snow Leopard, it seems the application no longer works and I can't get my startup sound back. I've tried uninstalling (which requires Rosetta to be installed first) and then reinstalling, but no matter how many times I reboot my iMac, I don't get that Apple chime.

Any suggestions?

Turn on your system while holding down Command + Option + P + R.

I really hope this thing will continue to work with SL. I'm holding out upgrading my ProBook until a few handy apps (Growl etc) get certified for it.

The great thing about the Mac Pro (workstation) is you can actually control the startup sound using the normal volume controls. You just turn down the internal speaker and set line out to something else. It always uses the internal for the startup sound. Wouldn't hurt to have an option to kill it on all computers.

I should add, I just tested Startup Sound 1.1 beta 2 on SL 10.6.0 on my Mac Pro and it worked fine. Download from http://www5e.biglobe.ne.jp/~arcana/StartupSound/download/StartupSoundPrefPane11b 2.dmg This version is Universal so no need for Rosetta.

As for uninstalling the old version first, I guess your best bet would be to Control+Click (right click doesn't seem to work reliably here) on the Startup Sound icon in the main page of System Preferences and click Remove.

Yes, the app installs fine without Rosetta, but the "uninstaller" that comes with it does require Rosetta to be installed.

Simply removing it from System Preferences may not necessarily remove everything, so if an uninstaller is supplied, I will usually run that.
