Apple Event: May 7th at 7 am PT

Looks like no one’s replied in a while. To start the conversation again, simply ask a new question.

How will we get our networking issues with SL resolved?

Apple delivers fixes/solutions thru "software updates" available to us thru internet. For many of us who are unable to maintain a link to the internet, I hope Apple will come up with an additional way of providing the patch.

The intent of creating this new thread is to draw the attention of Apple tech support. This is NOT a newbie issue, it is NOT an "operator error". When the Leopard boot works fine on the same mac and a "clean install" of SL doesn't, it IS a REAL issue.

Since we are looking at this from the outside having no access to the source code or the architecture of the OS, it can seem very strange why it works on one mac and not on the other, doesn't work initially, but starts working with simple work-arounds. But that is the problem of looking at it from the outside like we, the customers are doing. But, I am not aware of a precedence where Apple has acknowledges the issues and then promised to fix the issue. All bug reports from the customers are treated with "deathly silence" until a software update comes up - and then it may not talk about your specific issue at all!

Hope Apple will do a better job this time! And pigs will fly...

I recently had a power outage and all was well after it came back. But, alas, it's back to the occasional internet works (VOIP phone and instant messaging if already connected) but browsing does not. Maybe it's AirPort that needs the update. In any event between this and iTunes 9 crashing on search, all these recent updates seem to be very premature.

HolyDuck,
My wifi connection has been stable since it rectified itself magically. I have rebooted my mac mini a number of times, but the issue hasn't come back. I don't know if Apple has been able to reproduce the problem in their lab without which a solution could be a shot in the dark. I am hoping that my wifi would fail very soon so that I can get hold of Apple developers immediately. Otherwise 10.6.2 may come and go without rectifying the real problem.

I also have a Mac Mini, and to get a totally reliable internet connection have to go back to a 10.5.7 clone. I have spent days trying every possible variation of the basic settings with limited success.

Perhaps if some contributors would give their best success setting in Network relating to Ethernet or Airport we could compare and determine what gives the best chance of a good connection.

Just to let you know you are not alone. I upgraded a Macboo and Macbook Pro to Snow Leopard and both started having the connetivity issue. None of my other Windows and Linux machines were having issues. My router firmware is current. Therfore Apple has a OS problem that hopefully Apple will fix with an update.

In my opinion the auto uptate built into the OS is nice but they should also let us download them from their website (I haven't look to see if they offer this). Most of us can get access from somewhere even if our own is having problems to download an update. I look forward to a fix from Apple as I don't really feel the need to reconfigure what's working on my other machines (and thereby complicating my life) to make what should "just work" just work.

Good luck.

I think people should be aware that there is another large thread on this issue here: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=10468317#10468317

Also I have seen threads on losing connection with leopard & snow leopard mostly affecting uni-body macbooks/pros on the web.

It's usually a given that for every person complaining at a thread like this there are several others who won't bother for varying reasons.

Some people here need to defend Apple but Apple can easy do that for themselves if they want to.

The fact that other computers using the very same network do NOT lose connection tells us something IMO.

Apple aren't here on these forums to defend themselves so we merry few do defend them but normally only where individuals over-exaggerate the extent of an issue to the whole SL community (I'm not suggesting this post fits this situation).

There are hundreds of post claiming endemic system faults in SL when 99.99% of the time they are system faults/configuration problems on the users machine.

The OP has engaged the community really well after a dodgy start suggesting that anyone who says there isn't a fault in SL is somehow in denial and look at the end resolution - not an SL problem in sight 🙂 - I wish others would do the same 🙂

Unfortunately that doesn't assign blame.

I've used this example multiple times before in multiple threads, but it's a wonderful example:

Say a router's firmware has a bug where adding "2 + 3" results in "5" but adding "3 + 2" results in "6."

Say Windows PCs and various other Macs all ask the router to add "2 + 3" but one particular flavor of Mac asks it to add "3 + 2."

It's not Apple's responsibility to determine that's the problem and forevermore only ask the router to add "2 + 3," never "3 + 2."

Instead the router manufacturer must update their firmware to properly return "5" in both cases.

That doesn't mean Apple isn't at fault, it's just a way of demonstrating that "but it works with X, Y and Z" isn't a valid way of determining where the fault lies.

How will we get our networking issues with SL resolved?
