Uploading pdf, jpg or png crashes ALL browsers, HELP!

Trying to upload pdfs to my work website has proved impossible without crashing the browser. This is killing me, my company is desperate for this to be resolved.

So far I have used Safari, Firefox, Camino and Opera to try to isolate the problem. ALL browsers crash when trying to upload.

It works flawlessly on my G5 Quad running 10.5.8... but my MacBook Pro — used all the time off-site — is currently a $3,000 doorstop right now.

My job is working online. Without this basic functionality I am totally screwed.

How can I downgrade to 10.5 anyone?

I am having the same problem with any type of file upload in any browser, as well as apps that upload to sites (like Tumblr). It works sometimes, then doesn't (most of the time).

I think it is a problem with the file system because I also have crashes in Photoshop when saving files (images or presets).

This is INCREDIBLY frustrating as I had NO problems like this before 10.6!

Sep 28, 2009 12:57 PM in response to Wolfgang Matzl

I am having the same problem on my iMac running OS 10.6.1: browsers (particularly, Safari) crash when trying to upload photos...several apps (Adobe CS3 apps, MS Office apps, and many more) crashing when trying to save a document or image.

VERY ANNOYING.

I did some troubleshooting / tests with the help of an apple care specialist:

1)booting in safe mode and trying to upload a photo: Safari crashed.

2)same but with a different user account: problem did not occur.

3)verifying permissions resulted in a thread of some 20-30 adobe flash warnings, but repairing them did not solve the problem.

4)genius at the store looked at the crashes and suggested deleting com.apple.desktop.plist and com.apple.finder.plist and if that does not work do a clean install of the OS.

Below is the crash report. I'm getting this several times a day....

Has anybody found a solution to this problem? I will greatly appreciate any help.

Moving the files or images that I want to upload onto the desktop as you Wolfgang are describing did not make any difference whatsoever in my case.....my browsers crash upon uploading images and pdfs no matter where the file is being uploaded from.

One thing that almost eliminated the crashes or at least dramatically reduced the frequency (FIREFOX ONLY -- not in Safari) is to l_aunch the app from the finder's app directory_ instead of from the dock or from spotlight as I typically do.

Then I thought (or rather, the apple care specialist thought) may be the dock plists are corrupted or something (com.apple.dock.db and com.apple.dock.plist). So we went ahead and removed them. This restored the dock to its default settings....but that did not solve the problem. So I guess it's not necessarily a dock issue.

note: I completely removed all internet plug-ins except for flash, and that did not help either.

Sep 30, 2009 3:29 PM in response to Charlie Fellowes

I notice this happening only since we upgraded to Snow Leopard.

It affects both Safari & Firefox for us.

It happens whenever we try to upload any type of file (jpg, flv, pdf, gif).

It sometimes will work, but I can usually only get away with it once. The next time I try to upload the file the browser crashes. Seems to me like a memory issue??

That's my experience... looking forward to a response & fix from Apple ASAP.

Thank you.

For those that have been experiencing this bug, are you connected to an external or network drive? My iMac at home has not had any issues and I do not have an external drive connected to it. All my problems have come from my MacBook Pro, which has been connected to an external drive the entire time I have been using it. I disconnected my external USB drive this morning (and am not connected to any network drives) and I have yet to have a program hang on me today. Just wondering if I have been lucky today or if there may be something to having and external drive connected?

Oct 4, 2009 7:45 AM in response to Changgo

I think you may have nailed it Changgo. I have an Intel iMac '07 and a 13.3' Macbook Unibody which are almost identical as far as software installed, preference settings, etc. BUT, the Mac that is having the problems is the iMac, which is connected to an external drive (LaCie 0x4136 with 750 GB to be precise) -- I use this external drive to clone (via SuperDuper.app) my iMac every week or so. I just unmounted the drive and was able to successfully upload images to websites using safari. Then mounted it back and Safari started crashing again.....is there a way to fix this that is not leaving the drive unmounted?
