Sudden Log-out in Snow Leopard (+ Blue Screen)

Similar posts here show that other people are being spontaneously logged out of 10.6, faced with a blue screen, and then the login window. In my case it is caused by connecting my bluetooth (BT) headphones, as the log below states.

Short of never using my BT headphones or any other peripherals, has anyone found a solution to this terrible bug? Comments like "[Many applications shut down here]" are added to show that the log is just repeating with different applications.

Answers:

You can either boot in safe mode, or use one of many utilities. I prefer TinkerTool which does all sorts of fun stuff.

I have no idea how clearing the font cache helps. It's advice from this forum and it could be pointless for all I know. As far as I've seen, though, you really should reboot at the least, any time this happens. It seems to help.

Clearing out unnecessary and duplicate and bad fonts seems to reduce the incidence. But there's no really good way to establish a causal link between something that happens at random intervals no matter what, and any sort of preventive action.

Hello Rich,
Going back is fairly easy. That is, IF, you know what new files you've created under 10.6 and know where they're located. If for example, you've created 100 new photos or text documents, you should know where they're located on the drive running 10.6.

I would: simply drag and drop those files in the appropriate / corresponding folder on the backup drive running 10.5. ( I do this all the time - since I'm running 10.4 and 10.5 on two different bootable drives + a 2-drive RAID backup in my Mac Pro.) Then when you clone-back the 10.5 backup drive to the drive running 10.6, you'll have all the files from both "old" and "new" Home folders. And yes, if you're lucky enough to have those "10.6" files in one or a few folders on the 10.6 drive, you can just drag those folders over to the corresponding place on the 10.5 drive.

Even if those newer files have different permissions: you can still make them belong to your original account under 10.5 by doing a "Get Info" and changing the permissions. If doing that with folders: you can do "Get Info" on that (10.6) folder and change permissions enmass to that of the enclosing folder under 10.5.

After you've saved all the files you need from the drive running 10.6, you can then proceed to clone the 10.5 drive to your main boot drive. I believe SuperDuper is like other cloning apps: you will definitely have it completely erase the 10.6 drive before actually cloning.

This is a simple operation - though it takes a fair amount of time, depending on the total amount of data being cloned / transfered.

The alternative: is to use your original 10.5 install disk to: (1) erase the 10.6 disk, (2) install 10.5, then (3) upgrade 10.5 and then (4) transfer only the files remaining on the original backup (10.5) disk to the fresh 10.5 installation disk (i.e., your main HD).

MacNoel,

Thanks for your response. Actually files such as photos, text, etc. I am familiar with how to move. It was mail messages that I was concerned it. I do use Apple Mail, and have hundreds of messages that I keep. But when I take a closer look at Superduper I think that I might be able to "just" copy user files and not system. That would be perfect, if it updates all my mail messages, web bookmarks, besides updating any word documents, photos and other stuff. Then, maybe I can reverse the clone and copy back.

I appreciate your help.

I'm still having the problem, primarily with Eudora which I use every day. I have had it fail with MS Office 2004 as well but I don't use it daily like Eudora. For what it's worth, it seems to fail when I'm using the keyboard rather than the mouse.

I've re installed the 10.6 with the "install Rosetta" option and then upgraded to 10.6.1 hoping it would fix the problem. So far no luck. I hope Apple is working on this....

Rich,
I haven't paid close attention to the procedure for transferring email in Mail.app but I see two possibilities:
1. Consult Mail Help, it does provide info on archiving and importing email messages.
2. Also check Migration Assistant to see if it updates the email files you want to have once you're back to running 10.5.

3. Same applies to web bookmarks: consult the Help menu for whatever browser you're using. I don't recall but maybe Migration Assistant can help with that too.

You probably already know: Migration Assistant.app can be found in the Utilities folder - but only works "from" the newly created Volume (so you have to archive first to have something to import to the new 10.5 Volume).

Good luck!

MacNoel,

I took your advice. I archived my Safari bookmarks and Mail boxes (I have several - organizing, etc.). Then I also checked Applications, documents to see if there were any differences, and if so, copied them. (There really was very little difference.) Then I rebooted to 10.5.8, imported the bookmarks and mailboxes. Now that everything is up to date, I can boot from the 10.5.8 drive for a few days more, just in case I forgot something, and then do a reverse clone with Superduper.
Eventually when this OSX problem is resolved, I guess I'll reinstall 10.6, but not for a while.

Thanks again.

Rich Green
