Sudden Log-out in Snow Leopard (+ Blue Screen)

Similar posts here show that other people are being spontaneously logged out of 10.6, faced with a blue screen, and then the login window. In my case it is caused by connecting my bluetooth (BT) headphones, as the log below states.

Short of never using my BT headphones or any other peripherals, has anyone found a solution to this terrible bug? Comments like "[Many applications shut down here]" are added to show that the log is just repeating with different applications.

Hello Rich,
I too got a little over-excited by the Apple keynote on Snow Leopard. I started preparing for that attractively priced SL install disc: bought the Mac Box Set with the 10.5 installer a month ahead. I also bought a new 1 TB drive and partitioned it for Leopard + storage. I don't regret that, but by the time I'd gotten used to 10.5, 10.6 was released (early) and the trouble reports began appearing quickly. That's when I realized this was another situation where further waiting would be a good thing (and do no harm to my operations).

Funny though: I DID bite on the minor iMovie upgrade released a few weeks ago (v 8.0.4 to 8.0.5). As soon as I tried to start a new movie project, iMovie started freezing "hard" - causing me to do forced shutdowns a couple of times. My efforts to find a cause and a fix have been unsuccessful. But others (who use Time Machine) have been able to back up to 8.0.4 to solve this issue. That's the problem: we never know when an update or new release will botch things - until after we've committed.

You mention iPhoto and that makes me wonder about the iLife suite as a whole. Of course, we've already seen that Pages (part of iWork) has crashed when doing some operations under 10.6. I guess being a little cautious about installing updates and major releases isn't such a bad idea.

Macnoel,

Yes, delaying an upgrade can be a smart move. How often have we seen/read about problems. But I do admit, I don't always practice that advice. I don't use Time Machine, using SuperDuper instead, but I usually backup my HD before an upgrade and then wait to see if a problem arises. This time, my bootable backup HD still had 10.5.8, so after doing some minor copying, I reversed my backup.
As for the iLife suite, yes there are problems but I still like the product. I still use the old iMovie, but do you remember another problem that took a long time for Apple to fix - the soundtrack was out-of-sync with the picture. That was aggravating. Now with iPhoto, the previous version had no music soundtrack "fading" problem. This one does. Another hair-puller. I found a work-around on the discussion forum, but the question is why. This has been going on for months. The iLife suite has to have there own programmers. Why isn't it fixed? Unfortunately I didn't have the old version of that program to use.

Oh well.

Sarah,

In my case, I have a backup HD that is a clone of the main computer HD. When I installed Snow Leopard on my computer I DID NOT back it up, waiting to see how everything turned out. This obviously turned out to be the right move. So all I had to do was a "reverse" backup - using my backup HD that had my 10.5.8 still on it. (There are a few other details in that process, but it still wasn't hard.)
So my first question is, do you have the same situation? If not, it's going to make it more difficult.

Sarah and Eric

I have the same problem! Has a new thread been started for this problem?

The login problem happens for only one user on a multi-user machine. The machine works fine for other users. The cursed user was having flaky behavior with an old version of Microsoft Word X, but after upgrading to 10.6.2, she can no longer login. When she logs into her account, the screen rotates, turns blue for about 10 seconds and then returns to the login screen. I moved her account directory and the system made a new one, but the same non-login behavior happens. Per this discussion I tried the standard, (clean Font Book, remove old wacom drivers, reset PRAM, Reset Power Management, fixed Disk Permissions) ... any other hints?

The console has lots of messages like
11/22/09 10:04:46 AM com.apple.coreservicesd[20] _FreeSegGetNext: invalid marker.

Apple support came through!

The Apple expert said to "Safe Boot", by holding down the shift key while powering on.
Safe Boot disconnects all the devices (except the keyboard/mouse), internet, and any startup items.

This allowed me to log into the cursed account to change the startup items, (unchecked the hide for iTunesHelper). After a normal reboot, the cursed account is now works.

I suspect that the safe boot login overwrote some corrupted file.
