Installation could not be completed

I'm having a problem installing snow leopard. After about 20 minutes of installing (1/4 complete) the installation stops and says in could not be completed. Provided is an installer log which shows the problem starting with:

Sep 4 19:19:24 localhost Unknown[88]: 2009-09-04 19:19:24.494 Mac OS X Installer[137:c70b] Looking for system packages
Sep 4 19:19:26 localhost Unknown[88]: 2009-09-04 19:19:26.517 Mac OS X Installer[137:c70b] Finding system files...
Sep 4 19:20:50 localhost LCA[87]: Using keyboard layout 0
Sep 4 19:20:50 localhost LCA[87]: Found primary language hint "en"
Sep 4 19:20:51 localhost LCA[87]: Child exited with status 10
Sep 4 19:20:55 localhost Unknown[155]: Launching the Installer Crash Log Viewer
Sep 4 19:21:01 localhost ReportCrash[151]: Process: Mac OS X Installer [137]

After this is just line after line of "localhost Report Crash[151]:..."

I have no idea what it means and what to do to fix it. Any help would be appreciated

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.5.8)

HI Dan,

Try booting from your install disk (not the SL disk). Make sure there aren't any problems with the startup disk.

Insert Installer disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key until grey Apple appears.
Go to Installer menu (Panther and earlier) or Utilities menu (Tiger and later) and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
Select First Aid in the Main panel.
(Check S.M.A.R.T Status of HDD at the bottom of right panel. It should say: Verified)
Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.
When you are finished with DU, from the Menu Bar, select Utilities/Startup Manager.
Select your start up disk and click Restart

Check available disk space.
Control or right click the MacintoshHD icon on your Desktop. Click "Get Info". Under the General tab you will see Capacity and Available. Make sure there is at least 10% available disk space, 15% is better.

If you cannot boot from your install disk, try booting in Safe Mode

What is Safe Mode

Do I need to boot from my install disk to verify everything? I restarted from my HD and was able to get the computer running normal. Using Onyx, I check S.M.A.R.T. and startup disk. I also verified everything through Disk utility. I have plenty of space - over 40% -

I'm not able to find a startup manager through Utilities. I looked through finder, but can't locate it.

I could start up in safe mode, but then what? Do I insert the SL disk and try again?

You could repair disk, check S.M.A.R.T status, and then try an erase and install, given a sound backup plan not involving Time Machine.

To erase and install, start up to your DVD and stop after selecting your language. Use the menus to start Disk Utility and erase your drive. Quit Disk Utility and proceed with your installation. At the end, you will be able to choose to reclaim your settings, files, and apps from your backup.

I would move to SL if, and only if, I had an external drive with a bootable clone of my internal on it. I think that there is enough risk in going to SL that such conservatism is warranted. I would not use time machine alone for backup/restoring. This app can be problematic and, consequently, its solo use is too risky for me. You will be able to extract your settings, files, and programs from your clone if you do an erase and install.

ok, forget that last post. I did the research and now have a bootable clone on an External HD. I attempted the erase and install option following donv's instructions, however installation could not be completed because the necessary files had been erased - what they are? I don't know - I was thinking there would be a log I could copy, but after I hit continue it just restarted and started installing again, only to freeze right away.

so now I can boot up with my EHD but I'm not sure how to restore the hard drive, and don't want to mess around aimlessly incase I screw it up more. (side note, I also have an online back up through carbonite if that helps)

I just had a thought - could I boot from the clone, and then install to erased hard drive? this way whatever files were needed should be present?

please advise!!

Do you see any evidence of a CrashReporter log for process "localhost LCA" or "OSInstaller" in Console (probably in the /Library/Logs section)? This might provide more clues about what went wrong than install.log.

FWIW, in my (successful) install.log at about the point where yours shows "Child exited with status 10," mine shows:

Aug 31 16:11:53 localhost LCA[86]: Found primary language hint "en-US"
Aug 31 16:11:53 localhost LCA[86]: Launching the Installer using language code "English"

This makes me suspect that there is something wrong with your currently selected language file(s), although I do not have a clue what it might be.

However, I don't seem to have any "localhost Unknown" entries preceding this either, which may mean something else is at fault.

I don't see anything in the Logs with those titles. however there is a log - "CSConfigDotMacCert-@me.com-SharedServices.log" - which shows:

9/4/09 9:43:12 PM ET [105]:
9/4/09 9:43:13 PM ET [105]: ========= Start =========
9/4/09 9:43:13 PM ET [105]: === /System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Frameworks/OSServices.framewo rk/Versions/A/Support/CSConfigDotMacCert -l /Users/Payne/Library/Logs/CSConfigDotMacCert-@me.com-SharedServices.log -u @me.com -t SharedServices -s
9/4/09 9:43:13 PM ET [105]: * invalid user name @me.com

according to the log, this happens everytime I turn on my computer. Additionally there is another log that shows pretty much the same thing but rather than "invalid user name @me.com" it says"password for dipich6@me.com could not be obtained from the keychain"

I have no idea what they would mean, but they seemed to have started when I attempted to upgrade.

By any chance, are you using something other than the retail Snow Leopard disc, such as one marked "CPU Drop-in DVD" or one you got through the up-to-date program? If so, you probably can't do an erase & install of Snow Leopard with the disc, because it requires Leopard to be installed first.

gave it another attempt and was able to save the installer log:

not sure...

Again though, I'm more concerned with restoring my Hard Drive from my External HD now. Do I need the Leopard installer disk? The SL disk give the option to restore from EHD but it is not showing up. I suppose I should start a new post in the appropriate section for this.

I am sorry I did not realize that you still are posting. Your disk should work. If you want to install SL, then you need to boot from your DVD. If you want to restore your clone, then use the same program as before except restore the opposite way. In other words, the source you will restore (or restore from) is your clone volume, while the destination your will restore (or restore to) is you internal drive volume. It's always restore (or copy with, for example SuperDuper) from clone to, in your case, your internal disk volume.
