iChat snow leopard video NOT working

Video chat doesnt seem to ever want to work!!!! It's very frustrating! I can't even change my port to 443, that fixed the problem when I was on Leopard. Whenever I try to change it to 443 it changes bak to 5190 automatically. I log off and change it, and i noticed when I change it to 443 and click outside of that box, it'll automatically change to 5190. Can anyone help me?

I'm having the same problem. I recently downloaded Snow Leopard from the CD and my first iChat call using the video did not work. I could see myself clearly at my end however the other end said that the video was very slow and choppy. I received several AIM error messages during my attempts to reconnect with the video. This is very disappointing, so much so, that I'm ready to uninstall Snow Leopard..if I knew how ! I'm reluctant to change any settings but I did read the suggestions & checked out my settings but they were grey. Help, help, help!!

Hi,

Israel should not be a problem.
Further East and soutwards can have issues. Mostly this is cause by what is effectively national Firewalls for "Security Purposes". This lows down the Internet to speed where iChat can not work.

I have had one contact in Suadi, a couple in Dubai but there depends on the ISP used.
Places that US forces are based tend to suffer with Bandwidth as everyone tries to "Phone Home" at the same time of day.

Hi,

In iChat before iChat 5 it's speed over the Internet was governed by the setting in System Preferences > Quicktime > Streaming.

In Tiger there were odd things that happened when set to Automatic (read as zero in iChat 3 and 384k in iChat 4) and Intranet/LAN (read as a number iChat could not work with in Tiger/iChat 3)
Therefore we used to say use the 1.5Mbps setting to get as much of your actual Internet speed as possible.

There have been issues where faster Buddies (Internet Speeds) could send too fast to slower Buddies.
This is exacerbated in iChat 5 as it sees the whole Internet Speed you have unless you cap it in iChat itself.

In Sweden you could get a 100Mb service both up and down. In parts of Australia's Outback you may only get 128k as a service. iChat's buffering can cope with some Internet Speed fluctuation but not that much speed difference.

The 500kbps setting should enable you to get it to work.

Not sure if this is the same issue, but my video chats drop part way in without any error message. Also, I have been noticing that since I installed SL the camera icon next to MY picture changes sporadically to the telephone and then back to the camera. Would this suggest it is a hardware problem? Is anyone else noticing this behavior?

After upgrading to SL iChat would crash minutes into a video chat. The other person is using aim, on windows. We were able to chat before the upgrade!

I'm now at home, using a MacBook Pro core 2 duo and encountering the following:
1) I'm unable to video chat with my friend. She is receiving the invite but when she excepts, I get a message informing me she declined, it takes several minutes to get to that point.

2) Connection doctor informs me that my router is "port restricted" though this was never an issue before.

3) Whilst in video chat (or waiting for one to be established) the microphone option is greyed out??

I changed the port to 443 as suggested in the thread and also tried with the 'AOL server to relay the video chat' on & off - no luck.

I believe this to be a Snow Leopard issue, because my iMac running Leopard is on the same network. And with that version of iChat I am able chat with my friend, without issue.

Any help is appreciated.

Hi,

Start with the Bandwidth in iChat > Preferences > Video Section > Bandwidth Limit and set it at 500kbps

iChat 4 and earlier used to read the Internet Speed as Capped by System Preferences > Quicktime > Streaming m(even if set at 1.5Mbps.

Now it reads the full Internet Speed you have.
When slower Internet Buddies do not respond fast enough iChat decides they have Declined.
If you Establish Video Chat there can be artefacts as the iChat Buffering can not cope.
