Sony Ericsson W705 Bluetooth sync - 'Start remote control?'

Hi all,

I have my W705 paired with MacBook and am using iSync successfully. One thing is really annoying me though, and that is every time I sync, a message appears on the phone saying "xxx's MacBook Start remote control?". To which I can answer yes or no, and the iSync works OK.

I'm sure I never used to have to answer this question on the phone - in fact I didn't have to touch the phone; iSync just synced. Not sure when it started happening, but definitely pre-SL.

I have deleted the device and re-paired it, reset the device in iSync; re-installed the Sony Ericsson plug-in; it still keeps asking me!

Anyone know how I can stop this message appearing?

Thanks
Andy

I would be interested to know if you have been able to sync your W705 with iSync on Snow Leopard. I've been successfully syncing for a while now and then with Snow Leopard it does the remote control stunt that you describe and also when the phone is paired it says that iSync doesn't support the phone and won't let me add it to iSync as a device.

I have downloaded and installed the SE plug in - there doesn't appear to be an update for 10.6.

In addition the option of pairing to a "mobile phone" appears to have gone from SL.

Any help would be appreciated.

P1, I definitely am able to sync the W705 on SL. It has always worked for me at Leopard and since upgrading (apart from the 'start remote control' message). I can reply either yes or no to that question and it syncs fine. I don't know why you are getting those problems but it sounds pretty fundamental.

One thing that puzzles me about the SE plug-in is that it says it is version 1.2, yet in iSync when I click on the phone it says 'Provided by Sony Ericsson (v1.1)' - as if version 1.2 didn't get properly installed. I deleted all the SE plug-ins under /Library/PhonePlugins and re-installed it, but still says v1.1.

Anyway, sorry P1!

OK today I found out the reason that the W705a was "not a supported phone" in iSync.

I had downloaded the Sony Ericsson plugins for iSync and installed them again after the upgrade to 10.6. This however did not fix the issue.

Today, somewhere random, I saw a mention of permissions on Library/Phone Plugins (or some similar location ;-))

I went there to find that I didn't have any permissions over the directory. I fixed that and restarted iSync and have successfully synced the SE phone.

Things to note. I repaired all permissions after installing 10.6 and the problem survived that and this worked fine under 10.5.8

Who knows? Anyway it worked.

This also happens with 10.5.8. My phone is set up to ask whenever a bluetooth request comes in, so I just answer "no" when it asks me if I want the phone to be a remote control for the mac, and everything is fine. If your mouse freezes, you should find that you can actually operate the mouse pointer using the navigation buttons on the phone keypad.

I guess that there should be a way of either:

- stopping the mobile phone advertising itself as a "HID mouse and keyboard" (HID stands for Human Interface Device, I guess), or

- stopping the mac asking to be controlled by the phone when you connect using bluetooth.

I haven't found a way of doing either yet. In any case, the fact that this happens isn't a bug: some people may want to use their mobile phone as a remote control and welcome this new feature. There doesn't seem to be an easy way to stop it from happening in the bluetooth options though, and that definitely is something that Apple should fix.

Using your phone as a remote control is not a new feature. My old Sony Ericsson T610 (released in 2003) had this feature and the screenshot below is from Mac OS 10.4 Tiger and it was there as an option:

However, what has changed in Mac OS X 10.6, is that during the pairing process you no longer get those options to set up the phone - it just chooses them automatically, so you cannot choose to uncheck the use as a remote control feature, even if you wanted.

I've had confirmation from Apple that this is a known bug in Snow Leopard, and apparently they're working on a fix.

Yep,
I just ran into that thread and can confirm the conclusion. The "Remote Control" issue occurred with Leopard and a Nokia as well as with a Snow Leopard and a Sony Ericsson. I also went thru all configs but could not find any matching option to uncheck. Hence, I guess (and hope) this is a bug and hopefully get fixed soon. I would appreciate if anyone has any workaround for this ...(?)
Thx for any further info!
