HP Officejet Pro 8500 Wireless Won't Scan Under Snow Leopard

After installing Snow Leopard, my new HP Officejet Pro Wireless 8500 all-in-one printer won't scan. It delivers the following error message: "No Scan Options - refer to device documentation".

Also, when I attempted to check and adjust scan settings using HP's Scan Destinations program, that program hangs and cannot save any setting changes. Then I have to use "Force Quit" to stop the program from hanging up while saving.

HP's software update reports the printer software is up to date.

It appears there are a ton of printer problems appearing for people after installing Snow Leopard, but I sure would appreciate any help on solutions if someone also has this problem.

Thanks much.

I also just tried connecting my 8500 wireless printer directly via usb and then downloading the HP printer drivers from Apple downloads and reinstalling.

The install hangs nearly forever on the final step, but eventually says the driver install was successful. However, then when connected via usb, I am unable to print. Printing works when you reconnect via the wireless on the 8500.

So connecting via usb and reinstalling HP printer drivers does not solve the issue. And it's puzzling, because the list of supported printers under Snow Leopard lists the Officejet Pro8500 Wireless as supporting both printing and scanning.

Somebody has it wrong.

If this scanning problem continues very long, I may be forced to uninstall Snow Leopard, because my printer is brand new.

I saw a notice to Snow Leopard users on the HP support forum which indicates that the HP printer management software basically doesn't work under Snow Leopard. However, although the scan button doesn't work on the printer, you can still scan if you now go through the Preview or Image Capture programs on your Mac to access the printer scanner.

I tried it and it works. I can now scan on my HP Officejet Pro 8500 wireless.

The HP instructions are at: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c01846935&cc=us&lc=en&dlc=en &product=1153481

Correct, at the moment the Officejet Pro 8500 as built in Print drivers, Scan drivers, Fax drivers, and a fully functional toolbox. What doesn't work is button support, HP Scan Pro, and hence OCR. Full installers for these device that add back button support and OCR should be available in the next 7-10 days or so (with any luck).

Just trying to help.

No, I think you are correct about not having OCR functionality. I just used the HP instructions at: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c01846935&cc=us&lc=en&dlc=en &product=1153481
which suggests that printing and faxing will work under Snow Leopard (and it does for me), but I don't believe OCR will, or the buttons on the machine. My understanding is that fixes from HP are on the way soon, so as long as I can print and scan now, I can afford to be patient in my case.

Hello, Andrew. I've downloaded the latest HP printer software update from Apple, but the panel buttons on the 8500 printer still don't function for scanning. I can scan and print from my Mac using Preview, but not directly using the front control panel buttons on the HP 8500. Are there plans for eventually restoring the full functionality of the HP printer control panel under Snow Leopard? Thanks.

Slayer,

Um, isn't it available now? Didn't the post three before yours (four posts before this one) have a link to it? I know I'm tired, so I know how easy it is to miss something. Here, I'll make it easier. Go to [this|http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?softwareitem=mp- 74801-1&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&lang=en&os=219&product=3752456] page and click the download link.

I think that will give you what you're looking for. Unless I'm so tired I complete missed your question. 😉

Just trying to help

Andrew
