Tivo Transfer

Hi,

I'm wondering if anyone who has downloaded the "Tivo Transfer BETA" from Roxio has gotten it to work and, if so, if you can help me figure out what I'm doing wrong. Roxio seems to think this Beta version does work and that all one needs to do is download it, drag it into the Toast folder under applications, and problem solved. But I've done that and I still cannot open Tivo Transfer. It "quits unexpectedly." (I have dragged the old Tivo Transfer out of the Toast folder, but I notice that while it now says "Tivo Transfer BETA" inside the Toast folder, it still says "Tivo Transfer" under the Extras menu. I don't know if that means anything, but I've gone through the steps with the "Toast Setup Assistant" now several times and every time I check the "allow Tivo Transfers" box, but every time I go back that box is unchecked.

I know this is really a Toast question, but I hope someone here has had success and can help me out. Many thanks--

Dallas

Yes, I'm sorry, I need to update my profile. I'll do that right away. My computer is fully compatible with Snow Leopard and with the new Beta for Tivo Transfer. From Roxio's web site, it seems as if the Beta version of TT is primarily aimed at working with Snow Leopard, since they were aware of the imcompatibility with the current version of TT and SL. Thanks, Dallas

If you have not done so since upgrading to Snow Leopard, I would run Disk Utility and use +Repair Disk Permissions+.

To test if this is a general problem with your system, or some conflict with your current user account preference settings or background processes, I would create a new admin user account in System Preferences Accounts pane

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.5/en/8235.html

Log out and log in to the new account. In the new account, you will be using default Snow Leopard user preference settings, and only standard background processes will be running (unless you have third-party software running at the system level). Try the Toast software in the new account.

If it works, there is some conflict with your normal user account. You can focus your trouble-shooting there.

If it still does not work, it would appear to be a system-level cause.

Thanks--I just tried both things, and the problem still remains (the new admin account had the same issue.)

As I say, there was a discussion about this same problem here soon after Snow Leopard was released, and that question is now marked "resolved." So I think the Tivo Transfer Beta should work--it's working for most people, I guess--and I'm hoping someone who got it to work can help me find what I'm doing wrong. It's odd to me that no matter how many times I drag the old Tivo Transfer out of the Toast folder it continues to reappear, alongside the newer Tivo Tranfer Beta.

You didn't say which version of Toast you are using, 8, 9, or 10. Each included TiVo Transfer. I couldn't find the beta on their website. Don't waste your time with TiVo Transfer anymore. As more TV stations move to HD, the content providers have now blocked any type of transfers, even between TiVo boxes. Almost anything I record now in HD is prohibited from being transferred.

Apple can't help you with this. This is strictly a Roxio issue, and I am done giving them money. Your solution would be to use Leopard on an external disk, or if you run Windows under Bootcamp, use the Windows version of the TiVo software.

I'm using Toast 10. And while I appreciate what you're saying, and I totally agree it is a Roxio issue and not Apple, I'm still hoping someone here can help me. Roxio acknowledges on their web site that Tivo Transfer does not work with Snow Leopard but says that the Beta version does. (Here's where you find it, by the way: http://kb.roxio.com/search.aspx?URL=/content/000091TT). And when this was posted to an earlier thread in this Apple discussion group, the question got marked "answered" so I'm assuming that many other users found this Beta version worked. So I'm hoping to hear from someone who downloaded it...to find out if I'm doing something wrong, if there is some step I'm missing.
Thanks--

I'm using Toast 9 on an iMac with 10.6 and the Tivo Beta works fine. All that I had to do was to copy the Tivo Transfer Beta onto my hard drive (Applications/Toast 9 Titanium), double click it, and it ran just fine. I didn't even have to delete the older version of Tivo Transfer first (which crashed immediately in 10.6, so I suppose there's not much point in keeping it around).

Sorry; I don't know what might be the cause of your problem.

I too am using Toast Titanium 10 and the beta version of Tivo Transfer will not work with Snow Leopard. As a work around, I have been accessing the Tivo using my web browser. Go to

https://<your tivo's IP address>/nowplaying/index.html

When you're prompted for a user name and password enter "tivo" as the user and your media access key as the password. From there you can see your Now Playing List and can download the .tivo files. After they finished downloading you can drag them to Roxio to be converted. It's not as automatic as Tivo Transfer is, but it's decent interim fix.

Ahh tech support for Tivo Transfer...

Here's my ordeal, and in the sharing of it, I hope that some somewhere may benefit from it. Please excuse the wall of text that follows. If you only want the summary, it's located at the bottom of this post.

I bought Toast 10 yesterday via digital download. I installed it and launched it. One interesting thing I noticed is that it asked me to install Rosetta to install the Tivo Transfer. This did not make me happy as I was wanting to keep that code off my operating system. Needless to say, I installed Rosetta and then the subsequent Tivo Transfer.

I launched Toast 10 checked for updates and was prompted to install Toast 10.0.4, touted as a fix for Snow Leopard users. I installed it and went through the Tivo Transfer install again, not knowing if this needed Rosetta installed or not as by now Rosetta already had been.

I launched Toast 10.0.4 and within it launched Tivo Transfer. It asked for my MAK key. I entered it and closed the window and... nothing.

I uninstalled and reinstalled it again. Powecycled my computer, my router, and tivo. Still nothing.

I checked the network connection and Tivo machine. All were working and online. Still nothing.

I contacted Tivo, talked with them for two hours trouble shooting everything imaginable on their end and mine: Tivo account settings, DVR settings, network configs, possible firewalls, etc. I even went so far as to have my Tivo MAK (Media Access Key) number reset. I waited two hours and tried Tivo Transfer again. Nothing.

I then contacted Roxio tech support who walked me through the same steps as Tivo had which were the same steps that I had taken before calling either of them. They then told me to delete all sorts of plist preferences, which I had done before, which I did again, and again that did not help. They even asked me to create a new user on my computer and run Toast 10 from that new account which, needless to say, did not work.

Everything on my end was working. I could see the Tivo via an IP address in my browser, my system software was up to date, the version of toast was up to date and all of my Tivo settings, both on the machine and on my Tivo account, were current and configured properly.

And Tivo Transfer still did not work...

Summary:

While Roxio says, as of this date, that Tivo Transfer works with Snow Leopard 10.6.2, they are wrong. _Tivo Transfer bundled with Toast 10.0.4, as of this date, DOES NOT WORK with Mac OS 10.6.2_

Here's what currently does work:

http://code.google.com/p/itivo/

or

Decipher's post above explaining how to use the IP address, your Tivo MAK number and a web browser to transfer the movies to your desktop and then to Toast 10 for conversion.

I am as upset as anyone about this, especially since this program was a determining factor in purchasing Toast 10. With any luck, Roxio will address this issue soon.

Now I have to figure out how to uninstall Rosetta from my computer. If you have any thoughts on that, let me know.

Thanks and GOD speed.
