Youtube Subscriptions?

Hey guys,

I love my Apple TV. But my YouTube subscriptions never get updated. I've tried logging out and back in, deleting and readding my account, restarting, hard restarting, restoring defaults, etc. Nothing works. Is there a maximum limit on the number of YouTube subscriptions that the Apple TV will list?

I'm not wanting to argue here. I'm very technical, but I'm not an expert by any means with this device or the Mac Mini. It appears to be very similar to a Mac Mini. It has a hard drive, an Intel chipset and RAM. The difference is in the interfacing with other devices. All the HD options and the software interface are the biggest differences. I'm sure it's similar and yet completely different.

Why not buy a Mac Mini? Because I already have purchased the Apple TV and it should work better than it does. It seems to be this forgotten product sitting in a shadowed corner of Apple. I have a new Mac Pro, a new Macbook Pro and at least 4 iPod Touches in my household. Buying a Mac Mini to get a Safari browser is silly. It should be on my Apple TV.

In my opinion, integrating a browser would eliminate a lot of the missing functionality with the Apple TV. I could watch movies and shows on Hulu. I could check my email. I could do all sorts of things if I simply had a browser available to me.

Heck, even the trailers are rarely updated. If you go to the Apple trailer url and compare what's showing compared to what you can pull on your Apple TV, there is a HUGE disconnect. And this is basically advertising, there is no reason to limit what's available on the Apple TV, compared to what you can watch on Apple.com!

if you want that then you clearly require a mac mini.
the appletv is not designed for what you want, and it never has been.
the appletv is an itunes extender and it does that job very well.

the problem is that people buy a product and then decide to complain when it doesn't do something that they want, or think they know better about what it should do.

personally i don't want to be checking my email on a TV. i don't want to be surfing the internet on a TV. i have a macbook or an iphone to do all that.

and to bring this thread back on topic.
any subscription i have on youtube shows up on both my appletv an iphone.
a few of my favourites don't show up on either and this is due to them not being converted or being opted out of syndication.

As Chenks has mentioned you have clearly purchased the wrong device for your needs.
The Apple TV does exactly what it says it should do and i also do not want to be browsing Safari or checking my email on my TV, thats what the computers and iPhone are for.

2 things though:
I presume when you say there is a disconnect between what's on YouTube on your iPod Touch and the Apple TV, I presume you are talking about the native YouTube App on your Touch, and not browsing to YouTube via the Safari browser? If it's the second option then the reason would be what Chenks has talked about extensively in this thread

Secondly, just checked and the Iron Man 2 trailer is definitely on my Apple TV - can't get more up to date than that

In my opinion, the Apple TV is a digital media hub. If I want to watch movies or television from sources other than iTunes, I should be able to do that. Being able to check my email? Yeah, I agree with you on that one. 🙂 When I step away from my computer for the day, the LAST thing I want to do is check email. It's time to be entertained!

The disconnect between Apple TV and YouTube (getting back on topic here). Yes, there is a difference in my subscriptions between what's showing on Apple TV and my iPod Touch using the YouTube application, NOT Safari.

Regarding trailers. I just checked the Apple.com site and there are at least 10+ movies there which are NOT on the Apple TV. Yes, the Iron Man 2 is there and that is up to date, but it's not synchronized. If Apple can't even do that with it's own devices, that's a complete FAIL in my book.

When it works, it's amazing. When it doesn't, it's beyond frustrating. It's a simple device which has huge potential.

I watch a lot of movies, so being able to access the newest content is what's important to me. No one explained to me when I purchased this unit that there was a month delay with what you can rent on iTunes and what's available to rent at my local Hollywood Video rental store.

I understand now that it's a licensing issue and is not isolated to Apple. It's XBox and Netflix and others, to be fair. But how can you say the experience is great? Must be drinking the Apple Koolaid!

Let me get this straight. New movies are available to rent every Tuesday. I can drive to my local rental store and pick up the latest movies to watch on my home theatre system. The same movies are available to PURCHASE on my Apple TV and I have to wait another month or more before I can rent them through iTunes. Alright. I'll give you that one because it has nothing to do with Apple.

However, the very simple thing of watching YouTube channels, subscription channels, should work flawlessly. At least give me that. Nope.

So, I can listen to my music and watch slideshows of my photos and watch trailers that are not current with what you can see on Apple.com. How is this NOT a fail? I've had mine for over a year now and when I first got it, I was amazed. But now, after turning it on every day and finding out things are rarely updated, there is simply a lack of functionality. I shouldn't have to use my Apple computer to do what the Apple TV is supposed to be doing!
