HP OfficeJet 6500 Won't Scan :(

I just bought an HP OfficeJet 6500 and hooked it upto my wireless router with the ethernet port. When I added the printer to Snow Leopard, it automatically downloaded the proper drivers. Printing works great, but I can't get it to recognize the scanner.

I have followed all the instructions on this HP support page ( http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c01846935&cc=us&lc=en&dlc=en &product=1153481) including repeatedly removing and reinstalling the Printer from the Print & Fax preferences screen.

The HP support document says a "scan" tab should appear, but one never does. Image Capture and Preview never notice any scanners, either.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Nick

I have the same scan problem ie. can't, even after removing/re-installing the 6500.
Here's the contents of the directory you mentioned:
Crossbow.framework
HPDeviceModel.framework
HPSmartPrint.framework
HPSmartX.framework
Interlaken.framework
Matterhorn.framework
ResourceManager.framework

all dated 25/9 or 2/19 (1st and 4th framework).

Please keep us up to date on this problem....the one time I desperately need my scanner I can't use it!

Pete,

There is no know reason why you shouldn't be able to Scan. If deleting and adding the print queue don't help, I'd remove everything, re-install the In-OS components, then re-install the 10.6 solution from HP.com. Do not install the solution on the CD that came with your device, do not use HP Scan Pro, and do not use HP Device Manager. Other then that there is no reason why the Officejet 6500 won't scan. Do you currently have the HP Uninstaller in your Applications/Hewlett-Packard directory? What sort of trouble shooting have you done?

Step by step here is what I would do:

1) If your device is connected via USB, unplug it.
2) Go to the Print & Fax system preference, right click on your device, and select "Reset printing system..."
3) Run the HP Uninstaller. When you get to the screen that says Uninstall, press and hold Shift-Control-Command-Option when you press the Uninstall button. Say yes to the scary warning message.
4a) If your device is connected via USB, plug it in now, and follow the steps to install the software.
4b) If your device is on the Network, download the HP 2.2 driver bundle from [Apple.com|http://support.apple.com/kb/DL907] and install it.
5) If you want the full solution, download and Install the 10.6 compatible version from [HP.com|http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?softwareitem=o j-74786-1&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&lang=en&os=219&product=3795314]
6) Add your print queue back (if network connected) and enjoy!

If you run into any other issues, let me know.

Just trying to help.

OK ... Here's what I have learned over the past 3 weeks after installing Snow Leopard and how it interacts (or doesn't, as the case may be) with my OfficeJet 6500:

- Snow Leopard does NOT support Appletalk anymore. So your ethernet connection to the 6500 is useless. You'll need to connect via the WiFi or hook it up to another computer (non Snow Leopard) via USB and Share It if you want to use ethernet over the WiFi. (I have a HP 1200 DeskJet laser that I had to throw away the ethernet converter and just connect it via a non-Snow Leopard computer before I could see it.)

- I had to RESET the entire printing system before my system would see the 6500 (in the printer selection window, hold the "Control" button down while you click in the window. A pop-up screen will say "Reset Print System". Select that and you will be able to see your 6500 via Bonjour over your WiFi.)

- The Scan buttons on the 6500 will NOT work anymore as the 6500 will not recognize the Snow Leopard system any more (which kinda bites). But the scanning software provided with Snow Leopard will access all the functionalities (like scanning from the Document feeder or flatbed, a good selection of color correction, resolution, and adjustment settings to choose from, etc.). I'm just a little bummed that I can no longer initiate a scan from the 6500.

In all, I love the fact that we're not tied to HP anymore for software support for the Mac (they were horrible for this) and that this is now all done through the Apple Interface. I guess with every system upgrade, you win some, and you lose some!

I have a brand new HP Photosmart Premium C390g. Printing worked fine immediately but neither HP Scan (which other comments in this discussion now suggest may be outdated) nor Image Capture even recognized the scanner's existence.

I deleted my old printer, reinstalled the new one, and that seems to have done the trick.

Right now the printer is connected directly with USB. I'll read through this discussion before I try and connect wirelessly or Ethernet to my Airport.

BDange,

AppleTalk being gone has nothing to do with the OfficeJet 6500 since the OfficeJet 6500 doesn't even support AppleTalk. The Ethernet port on your device should work just fine as should wireless. As for scanning via button pressing, if you install the full solution for Snow Leopard (available [here|http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?softwareitem=oj- 74786-1&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&product=3795314&os=219&lang=en]) then front panel scanning will be restored.

As for not being tied to HP anymore, who do you think writes all of the HP software included with Snow Leopard? Now we did work long and hard with Apple on making the In-OS scan solution for Snow Leopard work so well, and while they are responsible for the UI we wrote the drivers.

Just trying to help.
