Epson Stylus Photo 2200 - SL Problems

I have an Epson Stylus Photo 2200 (connected via FireWire) that I cannot get to print under Snow Leopard. Seems dead in the water, although Apple indicates that it is "supported" via Gutenprint 5.2.3. However, Epson doesn't list it as being supported via its own driver.

I'm not sure exactly how to get the Gutenprint driver to work with this printer. I would appreciate any comments as to how to get that done, or to any other work-around that will allow me to use the printer.

Same here.

Epson 2200 connected via Firewire that SL doesn't recognize. It wants to load the Guttenprint drivers.

Too bad; I've spent way too much using my i1 to calibrate the entire system and generating custom ICC profiles with the native Epson drivers to switch to the Frankenstein drivers.

Sigh. I guess they expect us to buy new printers every year and toss the "old" ones into the landfill.

Here's a clue for Epson: If you don't want to support the printer, why not make the printer driver open source? Then the community can fix the code.

I was having the same problem and Apple told me to connect via USB NOT Firewire 400. I guess Snow Leopard is no longer compatible with older firewire 400 devices. Anyway, it worked but after printing 1 job I got an error message about parts having lived there service life. Basically referring to replacing the ink pads. My work around (probably not the best solution) was to reset the ink pad counter. It took forever to figure out how because Epson does not supply a utility for the Mac only PC. But if you do this you don't need a utility to reset the ink pad counter. I found it at this site.

1. Turn off the printer power and unplug the power cord from the wall. Disconnect the computer interface cable at the back of the printer.
2. After one minute reattach the power plug to the wall, but don't reattach the computer cable.
3. Hold down the ROLL and the PAPER ADVANCE buttons simultaneously.
4. Turn the printer on. after 2 blinks, all the ink lights come on, then release the buttons being held down.
5. Press and hold the ROLL button for 10 seconds.
6. Release the ROLL button and the printer will initialize, which resets the Waste Ink Pad Counter.
7. Once initialization is complete, turn the printer power off.
8. Reconnect the interface cable.
9. Turn the printer on and print a document.

Hi Forrest,
I got a different response from Epson support just today re: Epson 2200

"Regrettably there are no plans to introduce a Snow Leopard driver for your current printer. The operating system supplied driver should have worked out. However, considering the issues you are encountering it might be best to contact us for further assistance."

I'm hoping they'll consider updating the 2200 driver. A large format printer shouldn't have to be retired so soon.

I am really disappointed with Epson. I upgraded to Snow Leopard and the print menu screen that used to come up has been replaced by some other screen and most importantly, it does not allow me to click on No Color Management! The other menus that allowed me to choose what paper I was using along with print resolution is all changed. I had it set up so that it worked beautifully using OS 10.5x. Does anyone have a solution? I can print out using my USB connection but the printout is too blue (which is why I turn off color management).

I have a 2200 connected by USB and it prints, but there's really no point with Snow Leopard.

The color is now terrible, dark and blue green. This apparently is the common issue amongst Snow Leopard/2200 users. Certainly the Gutenprint driver is awful.

I've kept 10.5.8 on another drive just to print with and to use when I don't want my Adobe CS4 apps to crash.

Epson has responded to some with a suggestion to buy a new printer. As the 2200 is a great photo printer it'd be nice if they took the time to give us a new compatible driver for SL.

I'm not sure what's happening, as I made some careful comparisons between 10.5.x and 10.6 and found no difference.

Now, it's important to understand how I print. I use Photo Shop and Lightroom and have them manage color. That is, I turn off "have printer manage color". I also use the Epson paper profiles.

If your print application and the printer don't agree on who is managing color, you get some awful results.

I spent 45 min with Epson tech support for their professional printers. The tech was a senior guy and knowledgeable. I'm running a MacPro with Snow Leopard and printing with a 17" Epson 4000. Prints using the Epson driver appear unnaturally dark. This is a known problem at Epson. Unfortunately, there isn't a straightforward known solution!

One workaround involves using the Epson print driver to color manage. This is an odd way to CM for most of us, but turning off CM in PS4 and using the Epson driver produced good results--much to my surprise.

The other workaround involves using a RIP such as ImagePrint. Once I was able to uninstall and re-install their software, my prints were back to being spot-on. I very rarely use the Epson driver to print, which is the idea with a RIP. I only tried using the Epson driver when my RIP software was hosed after upgrading to SL.

RIP software is an expensive solution but worth considering. Epson and others should GUARANTEE driver compatibility for their consumer printers/scanners for 5 years and perhaps longer for the proline printers. Nikon decided to skip writing drivers for my $2,000 scanner when Leopard came out. This just isn't acceptable. I don't need a $2,000 paperweight--even if it does say Nikon!

I found one solution: print from Photoshop CS3 using Rosetta. Photoshop CS4 under Rosetta might work too, but I can't test it today.

Do a Get Info on the application in the Photoshop CS3 folder and check the box saying "Open using Rosetta".

The correct color managed workflow now works again, at the cost of some application speed.
