Alan,
A little more info would help. What version of Final Cut Pro? How is it refusing to capture? What happens when you open up log & capture?
Try this thread for a possible solution, as well as posting back with _much more_ information on your current setup and _what exactly_ the symptoms are.

sorry should have been more clear.
its capturing fine now using in and out marks but whats now happening is the sound and the picture are about 2 frames out of sync..maybe more.
the camera is recording in 16-bit audio and the machine is set to capture 16bit but it says the reel speed is wrong or something. its a small but very annoying problem

Where are you seeing the 2-frame difference? during capture? after capture and viewing on computer? after capture and viewing through external A/V device?
You might want to read page I-220 in the Final Cut 5 manual, depending on when you're seeing this 2-frame difference.
"it says the reel speed is wrong or something."
I've never seen this before. It'd be very helpful if you could post the exact message you're getting.

Its after the clip has been captured and when im viewing it on the computer.
ill get the message for you but it wont be until tomorrow.
its something along the lines of "the reel speed of the device does not match that of the machine and it may cause the sound and picture to be out of sync"
