itunes 9 crash/hang

Since installing itunes 9, i get a spinning beach ball every couple of seconds/minutes. Sometimes it goes away, but I seem to have to force quit every couple of minutes. I have reinstalled the software twice. Not sure how to fix, as the program is basically unusable now.

Macbook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6)

Mine won't even crash... I just get the spinning ball soon after opening iTunes 9. It will run indefinately (well, the longest I have let it go so far has been 90 min) and I cannot even force quit. The only thing that works is a hard restart and I've done that seven times now today. THis can't be good for my system.

Someone at Apple has to help us!

Same problem here. Consistently hanging for a couple of minutes each time I play or do anything.

Unfortunately for me I am about to go offline for a while (I'm emigrating to Australia) and I'm not anticipating having reliable internet for about two months. Funnily enough I was only thinking yesterday about what would happen if my iTunes/iPod Touch combo became borked just before my flight (Saturday - 26 hours duration). Looks like my worst nightmare has come true.

Don't suppose there is a quick patch in the pipeline by any chance?

Yeah, that was what I was beginning to think might be the best idea. I was just hoping that perhaps iTunes was crunching some data somewhere and once that was finished normal service might be resumed. I am still hopeful that may be the case so I'll leave my Macbook open today to see if it just magically clears up by itself.

If not, then maybe I'll have to downgrade (for the first time ever, I might add, with any software). But hey, Apple have not let me down before so I am quietly hopeful that all that is happening is I am not seeing the 'under the hood' process that would be visible via some sort of Activity Window.

And I must add that this is merely an inconvenience for me, nothing more. As I shall be flying to Australia with my 18 month old son the chance of me getting more than an hour or two of listening pleasure from my iPod is quite unlikely anyhow. However, saying that it would be great if this wasn't happening.

Got it up and running. Talked to an Apple genius at a nearby store. He suggested that I simply turn everything off and let iTunes run a LONG LONG time. It took 2.5 hours, but it finally finished going through the library and now seems to be working fine.

If you are having hangups and spinning beach balls, try shutting everything else off and just let it run over night....

Hope that helps.

Apparently I have a situation that is worse. After installing iTunes 9 it totally brought down my system. whenever I logged in I get the beachball spinning and I had to reinstall the system. My library is ruined now with version 7.2 and I have a lot of apps for my iPod Touch. I am trying to find an installer for iTunes 8.2 but cannot find one. Can anyone help out?

Yes, it does appear that patience was all that was required. Touch wood, it appears to have now regained its responsiveness and is acting like the iTunes that we know and love.

Thinking about it I am sure that iTunes 7 and 8 both required an inordinate time to do whatever it was doing when they first appeared too. I shall make a mental note for iTunes 10.

Can't complain too much, the first iPod I picked up required me to use MusicMatch software (on Windows) - now that was painful!
