Double click home button opens music app after 3.1.1 update, not good!

Tried your steps, still saw a volume slider from the first slide to unlock screen after the restart, then saw it again after launching an app and putting the ipod to sleep, then double checked in music to confirm that I had nothing 'now playing'.

Two possible things that could be going on for you:

1. Make sure headphones are plugged in, the volume slider disappears without headphones since the 3.0 upgrade.

2. The workaround doesn't work with all 3rd party apps, so try your steps again using mail or notes (I tested your steps with tweetdeck).

Aargh -- I must not have had the headphones jack pushed all the way in before, 'cause now I think I'm seeing what you're seeing. Good to know there's at least a very kludgy workaround, then, as opposed to an outrageously kludgy workaround.

3.1.1 was released on Sept 10th. The first post I can find complaining about this was 4 days after that. You think 3.1.2 was already being tested to "fix" the bugs hardly anyone reported having 4 days after the release?

It's possible, nobody here knows what happens but it feels like iTunes 9 and 3.1 were rushed out to meet the iPod release date. If they knew about problems already, but had to get the releases out, they could have been working on bug fixes prior to release.

Not an excuse, and possibly not what happened, but it is plausible.

Well, 3.1.2 didn't "fix" the volume bug being discussed here, after all — so no, I don't see any signs they were testing this issue during that span.

But essentially, yeah, I do think it's likely 3.1.2 was already moving down the pipeline four weeks ago. I'm no expert or insider, obviously, but I'd be surprised if you could start a software update for planned release to millions of users from scratch and finish it within a month. For all we know, the next update is already in the works right now. In fact, that seems likely.

Well I just got through playing a game that USED to turn off my music when it started. It had an update and I can see what's happening here. I was able to switch to the iPod app (or what looked like a cut down version of it) from WITHIN the game (X2 Football/Soccer)

In the menus there's a little musical note and I can go into the iPod app and add songs to the game play-list.

So what I can conclude from this is Apple has given developers a way to control music from within the apps themselves and so removed the ability for us to do it. Well there's a problem with this. If I hit the sleep button, I can't double tap to get the controls up. I assume it's because the music is playing in the iPod app via the game. I can still double tap to bring up the pop-up but I can only restart the music by compiling an on the fly playlist, or adding a whole album to the games playlist. Oh and despite giving this ability to developers Apple hasn't used it themselves in any in built apps. So no fix for when you're browsing apart from the cludgy workaround talked about above.

Apple usually ticked me off doing sorta pointless and really annoying things (including a voice memo app with a "new" ipod that dosent have a mic) but i never thought they would do so badly on a new iPod firmware. They took away from tried and true functionality and flipped alot of things on their heads. Im thinking of going back to 2.2.1. so i can have everything run smoothly, my iPod controlls back where there supposed to be, and my jailbreak that allows my to use my own background......cause thats just so awful that apple HAS to put a stop to it. I would hate to see them let users do what they want with products that they bought and own.

i very much miss the double tap, which by the way works half the time in half the apps but never in safari. apple definetely fix this or i would like a refund for the upgrade which other than copy/cut/paste, which isn't that efficient, is pretty useless.

Argh, new update and it still isn't fixed. Actually, it makes me wonder how they could have forgotten about the first-gen touch in the first place when creating the 3.1 update...

Nope 3.1.2 didn't fix the problem for me either. Playing Wheel of Fortune game, the volume was too loud so I double tap the home button it exits and ipod app comes up ugh. In fact I have having some more other problems since the update. I think this is the beginning of the end for firmware support for 1G owners!

well, just coming in here to say that i hate not having the double-tap feature. in fact, that was the one big problem i found that people with iPhone's had, and I used to be so glad that it wasn't like that on the Touch.. but now we're all screwed =(

I'm having the same problem with this new "Bug". The ability to use any music I wanted in any application was unmatched by almost any device. But for who knows what reason, it's not a 'feature' any more, it was obviously 'fixed' without a mention in the firmware update notes. I'm so disgusted with how clunky this makes the whole iPod feel that I want to scream.

Having to setup a playlist ahaid of time when using the official apps (like Mail, Notes, Safari, etc) makes me want to forgo playing music at all because it's such a pain to lose your place every time you want to change the volume easily or change a track. I thought this was an IPOD! When was music not the priority anymore?

I can overlook not being able to have custom backgrounds, a graphic equalizer and so on - but taking a step back in the flexibility of the device as a music player makes absolutely no sense to me, especially when having iPod controls on the fly was so well integrated.

Apple - I hope you're listening to us. This 'fix' you made, needs to be 'fixed'. I thought my iPod got 'bricked' by the latest firmware, but much to my surprise it was an intentional setback... I normally don't get angry about changes, especially if they improve things somehow. This is NOT an improvement.

I would just like to stand with all of the other people who are disappointed, and voice my dislike of this change in the hope that I can get my iPod back to being a music player first and foremost, no matter what else I'm doing with it at the same time.

I have to apologize for my first post. I've never felt so ... well, to put it lightly, annoyed, with a firmware update for ANY device, than with this 3.1.1 update. It was so shocking to find out that it was intentional that it prompted me to join this forum just to express my feelings on the matter. I would normally be much more passive - which should again reiterate how important this feature was to me.

I hope that everyone submitting input to Apple eventually leads to our iPods being 'whole' again.

That's not the solution though. I don't want to exit out of an app to get to the music app. The point is that the iPod controls were not intrusive and let you "multitask" by giving you the option to listen to your music while using an app. HSAMURAI says it quite nicely when he says, "We as loyal and greatful iTunes users have already purchesed the app why not enjoy it our own way."

I have a problem with this. We are the consumers, and the developers don't know how we want to use our applications so this choice should be given to the people who actually shell out the money, not to the people who build the applications.

The other option is to contact each individual developer and gripe about the lack of functionality. I did that for awhile, but I have over 11 screens of apps now and that would be a complete waste of time whereas Apple could make the setting and avoid the hassle from my end. Clearly, they care more for aesthetics than usability.

I had considered doing the same, but was told by an app developer that some apps don't work on 2.x anymore and are firmware 3.x compatible only. 😟 So essentially, we're being forced to use a firmware revision that downright *****.
