On my 1st gen touch: Since the 3.1 upgrade, when I have music playing, double clicking home still brings up music controls, but when music is not playing nothing happens. Anybody know how to fix this? I can't get music started without closing an app now.
Sadly, the only way to fix this is to downgrade to 3.0 (something I am considering).
When multitasking, like browsing in Safari, or playing a game, what's the rationale behind being able to pause your music/podcasts with the pop-up controls, but after closing the pop-up, not being able to access the pop-up controls to resume the audio. In order to resume the audio, you're now forced to exit the application that you're in.
Basic use of the pop-up controls, like being able to start listening to music/podcasts while already in another app,
without having to start playing audio beforehand, is no longer possible.
Furthermore, more advance uses of the pop-up controls, like being able to listen to the audio portion of a downloaded video podcast, and multitask at the same time, is no longer possible.
I have no idea why Apple would restrict the use of the iPod controls in the way that they have. Doing so has taken away one of the few major multitasking features that iPhone/iPod Touch user had at their disposal.
You should ALL send Apple feedback in that case.

It might have been an oversight - given the 1G Touch is now out of mind I'm sure.
Yeah, honestly, the 3.1.1 update for the 1G Touch at least wasn't a huge deal, so I don't see a real loss unless your other functions worked better with 3.1.1 than 3.0.
I don't use mine enough to care, but I do think they should bring that option back.

I am having the same problem. At least now I know I'm not crazy. The one reason I use this feature is when I am in and application, such as a game, and need to adjust the volume. Some of the apps I use do not have volume controls within the app. Now, with this feature being broken or changed, I have to exit the app and open the music app just to adjust volume. I of course have the 1st Gen iPod touch with no external volume controls. Very disappointing.
A side not about downgrading to 3.0. The one new feature that came along with iTunes 9 is the application management for iPod touch and iPhone within iTunes. I am pretty sure that the iPhone or iPod must have OS 3.1 or later for this feature to work. A feature, that once I have used it, I can never go back to the old way of jiggling icons to arrange my apps. No downgrade for me. I just have to hope that get the iPod controls working the way they used to.

And you're right - to me, the benefits of 3.1.1 outweigh that one problem.
But please file a BR everyone!
And also, just do so once, multiple BRs from the same person for the same problem does not help.
I hope Apple will fix it quickly and publish it as a new Software Update release.
Besides I am just about to switch my old notebook with Windows XP to 17-inch MacBook Pro soon. But if they won't fix this simple bug I will probably re-think this idea.
PS. It was nice to see Steve Jobs back at the last Apple Keynote. I realy admire him as an IT visioner and as a one of the greatest speakers of our times.
Well, that makes sense if you think about the iPod problem as a real example of Apple's attitude to it's customer problems. Macs are not widely used by people in Poland, where I live, but rather just in photo-studios and newspaper's offices. If I decide to buy one I would like to know wheter they care about me when my hardware becomes an older one or not. In a past years I had a few Toshiba laptops and know that they offer software fixes for a few years after the launch of the product. Does Apple do the same? That is the question!

Do you think Apple are entitled to a couple days after an update to find out what's wrong?
