itunes 9 + windows xp x64-bit

I'm working on getting itunes 9 to run on Windows XP x64-bit. I managed to get the app running by a little luck. I initially followed the instructions here for itunes 8.x (http://yukichigai.googlepages.com/iphonex64) and it worked ok. I then went in to the 9 installer, lowered the minimum installer to 501 and installed. Boom. iPodService.exe fails. I have itunes 9 running, but only after I removed the service from the installer list. Naturally, I have an iphone and sure would like to get that to work again, but if the service fails, I'm not sure what to do. Anyone out there find a work around for the install that seems to work well?

I'm using the latest ipod nano, windows xp 64 bit on a hp media center. I had success with the installation of itunes 9 following greg.fenton's posted instructions. I also went through the installation of the ipod folder and registry key from itunes 8. Strange part happens when I plug in my ipod. Well, first the drive window comes up with all the subdirectories (that's normal), but then and itunes says,

!! "an ipod has been detected but it could not be identified correctly,
please disconnect and reconnect, then try again"

Has anyone encountered this issue before? I know I must be getting close. any advise would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Pete

I've got an iPhone 3Gs.

Before today I had it running and syncing with iTunes 8 all nice like with my XP64 SP2.

I plugged it in today and it told me there was an iPhone update ...so I downloaded it. Apparently I shouldn't have done that.

My phone is now stuck on the 'plug me into itunes' graphic and WONT DO ANYTHING ELSE.

I tried wiping out iTunes 8 and installing 9.0.3 the same way I got 8 to run (Orca mods, Device manager mods, the whole 9) and it still won't recognize my iPhone.

The device manager still recognizes it as a mobile phone, since I did that mod before. But iTunes just keeps popping up with the

"iPodService Module (64-bit) has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience."

message.

I JUST WANT MY PHONE BACK. I have no communication now. This is a big problem. It's ******* ridiculous that Apple hasn't fixed this yet.

Vijai - The person who created that script has unfortunately not returned here to give it to someone who can redistribute it. What you need to do is follow the guide on this website http://itunes-for-xp-64-bit.com/(This website was actually created as a means of easily displaying the content posted near the beginning of this topic). You must do this after installing version 8 first so you can have a working version of iPod Service. I recommend reading this entire thread all the way through, it's very helpful.

iTechnic - I have not tried to update my iPod but, other people here have said that the only way to fix this is by plugging into a supported version of iTunes, whether that be Vista or 32bit XP.

Thank you very much to every one who helped with getting this working. I got most everything working now with iTunes 9 on XP-64bit. I do want to mention that it is not necessary to do the registry backup and all of that. If you simply install V8 first, and then install V9 over it (using the service table deletion edit), without uninstalling 8, then the service is already at the point it would be if you import the registry backup, and iPod folder backup.

Anyway the only problem I have left is the error about ripping and burning. I installed that Gear driver thing, and I still get the same error. I uninstalled iTunes, reinstalled the gear driver, and reinstalled iTunes and still nothing. I am assuming that uninstalling everything apple would not help anymore than uninstalling only iTunes. Anyone get this working yet?

Quick update / HowTo for anyone not installing from scratch, or wanting a clean install.

FWIW, I'm now on XP x64 with 9.0.3 running without any errors and an iPhone on 3.1.3 syncing fine.

1: Install iTunes 8.2.1
Background reading:
http://sites.google.com/site/yukichigai/iphonex64
http://pctech.invisibill.net/?page_id=36
Download:
iTunes 8.2.1 - http://appldnld.apple.com.edgesuite.net/content.info.apple.com/iTunes8/061-5556. 20081002.Aw234/iTunes80164Setup.exe
Orca - http://sites.google.com/site/yukichigai/Orca.msi
7-Zip or WinRAR - Google 😉

Also, make sure you've installed QuickTime. I forget how I did it, but it's probably a whole different article for that. Just see appldnld for a quick guide.

Extract the exe, and use Orca to edit the Launch Condition in iTunes64.msi and AppleMobileDeviceSupport64.msi (see both background reading links).

Install AppleMobleDeviceSupport64.msi.
Install iTunes64.msi.

Run iTunes, make sure it works. Close it. Plug in iPhone, and update drivers as on http://sites.google.com/site/yukichigai/iphonex64 . Open iTunes, make sure everything syncs fine. Close. Install GEAR x64 drivers as on http://sites.google.com/site/yukichigai/iphonex64 . Open iTunes and the start up error should be gone.

2: Install 9.0.3.

Download the x64 installer from apple, extract, Orca iTunes64.msi and drop LaunchCondition, ServiceControl and ServiceInstall tables, and LaunchCondition row under InstallUISequence (that's all the steps under "Hacking iTunes64.msi" at http://itunes-for-xp-64-bit.com/ ).

Install iTunes64.msi.

That should be it. No errors, syncs fine. Unless I missed something.
