3.1 -- Unresponsive iPhone?

I did the 3.1 update around noon today, and since then I've had my phone become unresponsive 4-5 times.

Basically, it will sleep (or I'll lock it), and then that's it, it won't respond to any input or display anything. Home and sleep buttons don't work, silence, etc.. The only thing that works is to hold down home and sleep for 10 seconds and hard reboot it. Also odd is that it still seems to be doing... something. I can call the phone and it behaves as if it's ringing, not as if it's turned off.

Anyone else seen this or have any ideas on how to fix it? Just now did the restore from backup, so hopefully that takes care of it....

Well just a thought here dont rely on Apple to do anything for you. The only thing they will do for me is turn their heads and say they wont fix/repair it. I spent an hour and thirty min on the phone just to find out that they MIGHT give me a refurbished phone...VERY UNSATISFIED....What in the world is a WARANTY if they dont hold up to it! Anyone else have these problems?

My wife had the same issue, she took the phone to the Apple Store. The tech told her that they did an "In-store" only firmware update to her 3G. He promised her it would be the last thing she would need to do to the phone. It did not work. She ended up having to get a new phone with her AppleCare plan. The new phone has worked so far...

Because of this issue, I had the police called to my house!

Around noon I got a call from the Alarm company, they said my alarm was going off and they couldn't get a reply from my wife's phone number. I started calling my wife repeatedly to both the house and mobile phone. Then I started to panic after the 9th or 10th call. (no one else could reach her, and she was away from the house) She would have definitely answered her phone by the 2nd call. Turns out our dog opened the back door, and set the alarm off while my wife went to the grocery store. My wife glanced at her phone, but there were no missed calls (Obviously the phone was locked up). In her mind everything was normal, until she arrived at the house. The police officer had his gun drawn at our front door with the alarm going off, and the back door open.

Apple needs to recognize that people count on these devices for their everyday lives.

I have had this exact problem since upgrading to version 3.1. I've missed multiple calls due to this terrible firmware. It seems that every recent firmware Apple has released has been plagued with problems. Are they even testing anything before cramming it into our phones? What happens when you can't make a call after a car crash or when a criminal is threatening your life? It's great that the iPhone is shown as a fun game-playing toy in Apple's TV commercials but a cell phone can definitely be used for serious business. Many rely upon its function every single day. Apple's silence on the issue is disturbing. Why haven't they let users "downgrade" easily? Is it to appease the developers of the fart applications who have already created specific 3.1 versions of their programs?

I have this same exact problem too and I've waited silently for weeks in the hopes that this would be fixed or Apple would admit that something is wrong with some people's iPhones after upgrading to 3.1.

Neither have happened.

Please Digg this story via the link below in hopes that this will be brought to more people's attention and hopefully get resolved!

Add me to the list of people having this problem. I love the iPhone and the features it has, but this is totally unacceptable that the phone is having this problem and the only 'real' solution is to look into downgrading the OS of the phone to a previous version.

Very very frustrating. I'm going to contact Apple about this and some minor problems with my MacBook and see what can be done.

Just adding to the general 3.1 fiasco
My phone was working perfectly until the 3.1 "upgrade"
after that ive experienced DAILY data lockups where the phone would not connect to gmail / facebook, not receive or send messages and calls
it works after I restart it (turn off then back on) however eventually it does it again and there is no way for me to tell if its working properly untill i try to send a message or load gmail etc.
I cannot believe that I cannot downgrade to 3.0 Im just about ready to return it altogether.

Andrewwynn,

Thanks for the info.

Funny, I was not having any problems with 3.0.1. I grabbed it the day it came out...

Unfortunately, as you say, iTunes deletes "out-of-date" ipsw files. Since I downloaded 3.1, the 3.0.1 file is gone. (Lesson learned - back up ipsw files before downloading new firmware).

I'll just stick with 3.0 until Apple releases patch...

Add me to the list. In fact it caused me some embarrassment 'cos I was showing a non iPhone user an app they would be interested in and it did the whole coma thing, they said 'oh yes thats the iPhone alight'. Sigh.

Surely there's someone in the know who can tell us if there's another update on the way? I would be very disappointed in Apple if they are sitting on a fix but waiting until they can release a new firmware with other improvements 😟

As I don't have access to older versions of the iPhone OS nor iTunes, I'm not able to downgrade my iPhone OS to 3.01. What I've done is restored my phone to 3.1 again but set it up as a new phone, instead of restoring from backup. Yea it ***** I have to reconfigure all my accounts but so far so good. I'm not holding my breath but right now my iPhone feels faster than it has in a long time. I've read other people on this thread who still have issues after setting up as new phone, but it's working for me so far. It might be worth trying something cos it's better than waiting & doing nothing at all.

Wow. From the way Apple talked to me it was a problem with my phone. They had even scheduled me an appointment at a store, which is massively inconvenient to begin with. Taking a day off of work to drive an hour to the closest store, 3 days from now? Glad I decided to read here and canceled it wouldn't have done me any good.

Anyway add me to the list of unresponsive iPhones. 3 times a week at least since 3.1, just happened again.
