3.1 -- Unresponsive iPhone?

I did the 3.1 update around noon today, and since then I've had my phone become unresponsive 4-5 times.

Basically, it will sleep (or I'll lock it), and then that's it, it won't respond to any input or display anything. Home and sleep buttons don't work, silence, etc.. The only thing that works is to hold down home and sleep for 10 seconds and hard reboot it. Also odd is that it still seems to be doing... something. I can call the phone and it behaves as if it's ringing, not as if it's turned off.

Anyone else seen this or have any ideas on how to fix it? Just now did the restore from backup, so hopefully that takes care of it....

I understand this isn't a "reproducible problem" but that is what makes it so frustrating!!! This is real. I haven't had a problem like this ever with my white iPhone 3G, but it happens 4-5 times a day. I almost always notice it after I've locked the phone and then try to go back into it again to realize it is gone. I've plugged it into the charger and it doesn't seem to charge . . . it will be dead if I leave it plugged in for 12 hours, unplug it, and then hard restart. I can hard restart when plugged it. If I plug it into my iMac in the midst of a coma, the Mac doesn't see it.

Oh, and by the way, my iMac freezes up every week with SL too :-p I've started telling people that I'm looking hard at Win7 because this *****. I just unplugged a Tiger machine at work to move it and it had a 186 day uptime. I can't keep a SL iMac, MBP, or MacBook Air working for a week in the exact same environment. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr! It's all gone to ****!

so i made an appointment and went to the apple store today and to make a long story short, told them i was having the coma mode problem and got a replacement iPhone. the technician there told me he wanted to try a special update and see if that worked, but the phone wouldn't even take it, so he just gave me a new phone.

i asked if he knew the percentage of people having issues with OS 3.1, and he said that from the customers he's seen, it's only been about 1%. he also mentioned that because it's a hardware problem and it's very real, there shouldn't be any burden on the customer to try to downgrade the OS back to 3.0, or basically have anything short of a perfectly working phone that works with OS 3.1.

i hope others who have had the same problem can get their phones replaced as well, because i was just as frustrated as everyone else with having a phone that didn't work...

I just downloaded 3.1.2. Won't know if it helped till regular daytime use resumes Friday. My symptoms were intermittent lost cell network connection, but it still showed five bars and 3G network connected. It wasn't till I tried to make a call that I realized it was broken, again. After rebooting, I'd find several voicemails waiting. Frustrating, to say the least.

The only thing I require from my cell phone is working cell service. I hope this latest fix works, else I'm going back to my simple Nokia candy-bar phone, because with that phone, if you need reliable cell phone service, "There's an App for That."

Ever since I’ve upgraded to version 3.1 (7C144), my iPhone 3Gs touch screen becomes sporadically unresponsive. In order to alleviate the lack of touch screen response I have to press the sleep button and then wake it up. Needless to say it's annoying, I’m wondering if it’s a hardware issue, so will try to restore the entire device, and if that doesn’t work, will bring it to the Apple Store. (The interesting thing is, if I do a couple of sleep-wake cycles via sleep button, the unresponsiveness goes away for a longer time than if I do the sleep-wake cycle just once. I smell a hardware issue.)

I just got my iphone today and its yet to work. The guy in the store did the latest update and then when I plugged it into Itunes when I got home it told me it needed to update with the newest software, so I did and now it won't work at all! It just keeps giving me a picture of its usb cord an arrow and then the itunes symbol! But when I plug it into itunes it doesn't even recognize it and nothing happens. I'm pretty sad. I haven't even used it yet and its not working! 😟

If your phone acts like shown In THIS Movie (hyperlink). with 3.1 or 3.01 or 3.1.2, (on my phone did it with ALL of those Firmwares).. than go look at My thread here (also hyperlink) and post your before and after results On THIS page (hyperlink).

I have walked about half a dozen through curing their 'coma iPhone'.. it does NOT seem to require a downgrade to get either performance or reliability out of the iPhone 3.1.x Firmware. there is clearly some hiccup in the 'delivery system' because the exact same Firmware being installed using DFU should not result in different outcome on the same exact phone and yet it DOES!

you can email me direct if your phone is still stuck, or post in my 3.1.2. thread so others may be aided by the same answer.

90 minutes ago my phone was torture to use, typing an SMS might take over a minute with 5-10 second random pauses, but now it's acting perfectly.. the ONLY thing i did was re-install 3.1.2 using the new 'disaster recovery' method i developed.

I did not put all my applications (140 or so) back on, but will tonight and update with the final outcome.
