FWIW, after updating my iPhone to 3.1.2 as soon as it was released, it's been working perfectly since. No comatose issue for more than 5 days straight. Before I installed update, it was comatosing 2-3 times a day.

They finally fixed the OS selection field too!

SAME PROBLEM! Soooo annoying. My phone has been doing this since the update at least 6 times a day. I do the same thing everyone else is recommending, hold the home button and the other button on top (I forget the term) for at least 10 seconds and reset the phone. This has been such a problem for me. Same issues with calls. I don't see them or even know someone called, and for the caller, it rings as normal. Sooo frustrating. I don't even know if someone had called during this time unless they leave a voicemail. Apple, PLEASE HELP!!! Please let me know if anyone hears of a permanent solution for this BS problem.

what he said.. 3.1.2 is the 'bug fix' for 3.1 with 'coma bug'; however... not always will it work first try; my 3.1.2 was worse than 3.1 initially... i started a thread for 3.1.2 HERE to discuss 3.1.2, problems with, or successes, where i have a very detailed 'emergency contingency' that brought my phone back from being a complete zombie.

This is incredibly frustrating. I was at the Genius Bar last week and they told me this had to do with applications and not the actual phone.

    NOT TRUE.

I reset it back to factory mode like they told me, set it up as a new phone and not under my existing one like they told me, and didn't add any applications to see if it would still happen.

    IT STILL DOES.

Not only is this frustrating, but I am missing calls, texts, voicemails, too. I've done tests where I'll use my landline to call my phone that is turned on, and it will not register that I am receiving a call. When I send text messages, it will show that I have full bars + 3G and STILL just as I hit send, it goes all of a sudden "SEARCHING...." to "no service" then a minute later my service slowly starts creeping back up.

What the heck is going on? And how can Apple blame applications on this when clearly this isn't the cause?

The most recent update that was supposed to fix the comatose issue has worked for me. Haven't had a single problem since.

absolutely correct; this is a phone problem, not application problem; also i don't think it's even a firmware problem. (evidenced by MY phone which has had the zombie effect with EVERY normal install of EVERY 3.xx firmware).

which it will; you are describing the 'zombie' effect not the 'coma' (won't wake at all from sleep).

i solved my phone's zombie problem twice; i'm considering as an experiment re-installing the firmware 'normally' 'to see if i can re-create the zombie and re-work the trick i used to get rid of it.

especially if your phone is covered, i would give it a try i call it the 'crash install'.

by just dumb luck, during one of my many many (about 20) DFU restores of 3.1 onto my 3G, the iPhone happened to crash just after iTunes finished sending the data and while it was showing the apple with white progress bar below (stopped moving about 10%, just locked)... i was forced to reset the iPhone, i re-initiated DFU on iPhone and re-restored 3.1 and the zombie problem went away (of course still had the coma issue; about every 30 hrs it locked).

when i updated just normal 'update' from iTunes to 3.1.2, the coma was fixed and i re-acquired the zombie; the effects of which are demonstrated In This Movie (hyperlink), i re-created the 'crash' during install by using 'force quit' of iTunes during the firmware upgrade (yup scary i know; but i've had either the computer or iPhone crash at least 8-10x during firmware upgrade, and never failed to eventually get it), so i wasn't too worried.

anyhow; if you have 3.1.2 and 'zombie' effect and dont' want to wait another month or six (or twelve) to see an official cure, i would try the solution that has worked 100% of the time for me.

Would be nice … a few hours the 3.1.2 fixed my phone too. Now the «coma» is standard on my iPhone. I did the «crash install» twice, but with no effect so far. Restored my phone serveral times … absolutely no solution yet!

APPLE, please fix this, I can sometimes not wake up my phone or cannot call because it hangs and hangs …!!

How long shall we stand this situation? My phone is frozen for some seconds everytime after deepsleep and sometimes right after usage. Apps react with delay. GPS doesn't work for seconds during navigation.
    *hey guys! there's something wrong!*
