iPhone 3GS with fw 3.1 – battery life gets even worse

I've made the so long attended upgrade to iPhone OS 3.1 and strangely battery life has got even worse than before. The phone is using 10-12% of the battery every hour of standby; usage counter grows by 35-40 minutes for every hour of standby. This happens with a clean install and just email setup (mobileme with push), with restore or partial restore. Turning push off only makes it slightly better.

I was wondring if I were the only one experiencing this...

the upgrade of 3.1 fixed my problem on the fast draining battery. then my iphone with 100% fully charged only last for 5 hours during standby (no calls, text, wifi). i tried doing reset and restore 3 times.

after downloading itunes 9 and upgrading to 3.1 my iphone which i left at 100% last night and woke up 6:30 the battery is at 99%. now at 1pm the battery is at 75%. I made calls, use wifi, facebook, emails and listen to music. everything was left on......... push notification, email and wifi. apple must have fixed all the bugs on some applications.

So I've been thinking about this. Immediately after I upgraded to 3.0.1, my battery life was freaky. After installing 3.0.1, I charged it fully and went around with my business. I don't use the phone much, and it is in airplane mode most of the time (due to no reception in my office). For the first 3 days of the week, I was losing a few percent per day. Then on the 4th day, it dropped from 77% to 39% in one day. Just for kicks, I let it run to shut off before recharging. After recharging, battery life is fine, and appears fairly linear again.

Is it possible that the battery calibration information gets reset when we update/upgrade the iphone firmware? If so, it might explain the wide variation and wacky results. Since 3.1 just came out, has anyone with issues tried doing a full discharge/charge cycle before making battery life comparisons? Apple recommends doing this one/month anyway - and it might be worth a shot.

I performed the 3.1 fw upgrade last night, did a full charge on my iPhone and went to bed. When I picked it up before heading out the door this morning, I saw that the battery was down to 44%, and had 2 hours of reported usage. In the few hours since, it's gone down to 17%.

Pre-upgrade, I was getting three or four days of standby time.

Did you fully discharge it AFTER the upgrade but BEFORE the full recharge? It might also be worth doing a reset before the recharge as well - to make sure there aren't any rogue apps running in the background.

No, I did not do a full discharge after the upgrade. I was down to about 40% before I started the upgrade, so I just left it plugged in to complete the recharge after the upgrade completed.

I did notice that my push notification settings were changed after the upgrade. Charging now, and turned off push notifications. We'll see if it behaves better after this charge cycle.
