iPhone 3GS with fw 3.1 – battery life gets even worse

I've made the so long attended upgrade to iPhone OS 3.1 and strangely battery life has got even worse than before. The phone is using 10-12% of the battery every hour of standby; usage counter grows by 35-40 minutes for every hour of standby. This happens with a clean install and just email setup (mobileme with push), with restore or partial restore. Turning push off only makes it slightly better.

I was wondring if I were the only one experiencing this...

I noticed that after the upgrade, I am losing about 20% of my battery life per standby hour, which isn't usable. I have push and bluetooth on, as well as an Exchange account and 4 others (Gmail, Yahoo, Live and AOL) After it being fully charged yesterday, it was down to 5% after 4 hours of standby and 20 minutes of talk time.

I have tried to power it down and fully charge it and we will see what happens.

Since Li-ion batteries do lose it's charge overtime, I think it's the calibration. Even though we don't need to cycle the battery to keep it healthy, we do need to cycle it every once in awhile for the software to calibrate. I am assuming after the update the phone calibration resetted. Try running the battery down to it's shut off and asks for you to plug it to an adapter. After that, charge it fully to 100% then report back.

I had a similar issue with a laptop battery calibration. It was showing my battery was very low after a short period of usage, but it seemed to take forever to run the battery run down. After the automatic shutdown the next full charge did not have the issue.

Keep in mind that draining Li ion batterie til it's truly dry can be harmful for the battery. Also, you should run the battery low every now and then for your software to calibrate, I would say once a month atleast. All batteries depreciate over time, regardless of usage. It is a proven fact that temperature plays a role in this. Try to not keep the phone hot very often as high temperatures depreciate battery health faster

It's possible that it's the calibration, but I'm beginning to think not. I didn't get very good battery life with 3.0, but it increased dramatically with 3.01.

Now, with 3.1, it's bad again. I'm losing 1% battery every 5 mins or so just playing the ipod (audio only). Any work I do on the phone itself (changing settings, reading email, and the like) just crushes the battery.

I noticed this right after installation! My battery went from 100% to dead 1% in about 4 hours watching 1 40 min video and brief Internet usage. This has now happened all day today. Went from a full 100% charge at 7:00 AM and the phone has been in standby all morning. Typed 3 e-mails and now I am at 35% battery life! This is HORRIBLE! I cannot believe nobody in testing could have NOT seen this error? Absolute junk - need to get 3.0.1 back on or I cannot even use the device!

I hope this battery drain is not due to Exchange support as mentioned in another post! This is absolutely a disaster if that's the case for anyone getting e-mail from an Exchange server! Apple, please respond as some say battery life is better with 3.1 and MOST are not seeing this but it being far WORSE. I have Exchange ON and almost no battery left!
