System Activity Monitor usually shows activity in the 4-8% range. I noticed faster than usual battery drop today and looked and usage was close to 20%. The only things running were Phone, Mail, Safari, and iPod. Opened mail and after it checked the activity was the same. Then I opened Safari and there was some kind of animated GIF or something on that page. It was the only page open. I clicked the x to close it, and System Activity Monitor went back to normal.
Be glad Flash does not run on this sucker!!
So some of your battery issues may be due to whatever web page is left open in Safari.
OMG 126 pages so far on this battery issue, I sure hope Apple is listening they have a major issue here since the last update.
It affects my 3G 16GB model as well. I never had battery issues and now it barely makes it 5-6 hours at idle with everything turned off (including push) and it still is draining the battery like nothing I've seen before. There is a major flaw in the last update and Apple needs to address this NOW!
Apple needs to give us the ability to go back a revision when crap like this happens there is no excuse for locking us up like this.
You and some others may have poor battery life, but not all of us do. I have a 3G, and my wife has a 3GS, we have no issues of any kind, battery or otherwise.
None of the people in our Mac Users Group (300) have either, and most have iPhones. We are getting what is advertised, calculated on what we are doing - different functions use more battery life, as do different apps. I've mapped it out over three days, counting the amount of time spent with each function, and app.
I have all services turned on, except Bluetooth, as I have no use for it - however my wife does as she uses a Jawbone ear piece, and her battery time is Ok, no issues.
About 99.99 % of the time, what you have on your phone, and how you use it will be the cause of poor battery life. You should re-calibrate the meter once every couple of months, as well. All "true" smartphones consume the battery many times faster than an ordinary cell phone, or one that offers a few built in apps like email, etc.
I too am having a very disappointing experience with my first iPhone 3Gs. The battery life is horrible. It barely lasts 24hs and the loss of battery life in standby mode is stagerring. What's the point of putting in so many features into a device if doesn't last long enough for you to use those features! This products should not be classified as "mobile" as it literally needs a constant powerpoint! I won't be recommending this phone to anyone. My samsung preston lasted much longer and came on a $19/mth plan!! I feel ripped off. Apple you better do something about this.
Hi, I have the same problem with my new iPhone. Push off turned off, 3G turned off, Wifi turned off, email ... manually... And I have to charge every day at night, sometime twice a day, its pretty freaking me out, becasue I cant use ma iPhone as I really want and as I really need pls, do something with this...

Sorry, but that sounds like a load of crock. I'm as much a fanboy as the next (first mac was Se) have had 3g and now 3gs. I'm kicking myself this week for upgrading. Before this week I was running 3.0 and would run at least two days before needing a charge. And that's with 3g and wi-fi on, no push. The past few days I've had 100% in the morning and 10% by evening. The people on this forum are just the vocal ones. I'm sure there's countless who don't speak up. I love my iPhone to death, but this update has really got to be fixed.
Hi, I'm a proud owner of a brand new 3GS Phone with OS 3.1.3. A friend of mine and I, here in Italy, are experiencing the same problem as you. The first days with OS 3.1.2 were
OK. With the new firmware, the battery life seems to be decreasing in an embarassing way.
We've made comparisons with other friends who still have 3.1.2 (same kind of usage, same features) and the differences are clear. We all for mobile phone Co.s, so we know what we're talking about very well.
We are going to write "feedback" to Apple for this inconvenience right away.
I have noticed that some users in this forum are all agog because they don't have this problem and keep on writing nobody really has them. I feel pity for them, because they really must not know how to better spend theory time...

I have had all 3 versions of the iPhone (even waited in line for the launch of the first phone)and currently use my 3GS. I only started experiencing battery problems a few days ago. I went to my AT&T store and they suggested turning off 3G. If that didn't help, I could bring back the phone and they would swap it out for a new one.
I did what they suggested but then thought, why should I since 3G is one of the points that makes this phone special, plus, it didn't help? Where my battery used to last at least a day without needing a charge, I went from almost a full charge to 10% after one, 10 minute phone call!
Since I rely on the phone for work, I went back to AT&T and asked for a swap of phones. I was then told that only the Apple store could do that and they would most likely take my phone and install a new battery which could take days. I can't be without the phone so I just purchased a new one. Guess what? The new phone loses battery power almost as fast.
No one at AT&T owned up to being aware of this problem. So today I googled the issue and, to my suprise, I found 126 pages devoted to the topic dating back to Sepetmber 2009!!!!
Could someone from Apple please address this issue? Pretty please! As other posters have stated, this is truly not a mobile device if you have to keep it plugged into power all the time. We need a fix.
I didn't want to be a 'me to' kinda guy, but oh well. I was getting blissfully 2 days of standby, 1-2 days with regular usage on 3.0. Then like an idiot, I thought 3.1.3 would have fixes for battery issues (not mention some apps requiring it) so I bit the bullet. WHAT THE 'CUSS' APPLE????? I'm down to 10 hours if I'm lucky with regular talk time. If it wasn't for my mophie I would have screwed numerous times I needed my phone. I would even consider myself a fanboy, but I'm extremely 'cussed' off.
-and no, I don't want to do fresh install, clean install, back up, boot up, boot down, hack, slash, dot dot, etc...if I wanted that I would have bought a cussing PC and a Google phone. Fixit Apple!
The only way that Apple could hear us is sending a lot of feedback so they will realize that the 3.1.3 firmware gives many problems and fire those inept engineers who were involved in the development of this disastrous firmware, otherwise this problem will happen unnoticed and most likely worsen in the next firmware update, it's no use complaining here in the forums because the people at Apple did not even bother to read these posts, just send feedback again and again.... and lets wait if they realized about their mistake.
