Umm, not sure this will help or hinder, but I solved my battery problem. Been using a 3G for a year (heavy phone user). Changed to 3GS just over a week ago. Day 1 ok. Day2 upgrade to 3.1. (using a restore from my 3G iPhone (which was at 3.1). Day 4, battery life started to go downhill dramatically. By Day 5, the phone would not retain charge (from full overnight charge to empty in 4 hours, with NO calls or SMS). Couldnt take it back to Carphone Warehouse (they have no stock.....). Decided apple engineering couldnt be that bad... Restored the iPhone back to factory default. Created a new iPhone profile and did NOT restore from my saved 3G backups. Individually selected what I needed synced from the various pieces (contacts, email accounts etc). For various reasons, I decided to leave the 'mobile me' disk app (on basis of increased network usage) and a variety of other apps (mostly games) out of the sync for now to see if it is a software mix that is causing the issue. I also left my exchange email account out for now.

2 Results. Firstly, my battery life now seems to be back to correct operation (currently on 36 hours with no charge, lots of phone calls and I still have 80% battery left.
Secondly, the voice activated dialling on my BT headset now works correctly. When I first started using the phone (after immediately restoring my 3G 3.1 backup) I found it would not respond to teh BT at all.

So for now, I'm a very happy 3Gs user. Will report back if it suddenly goes downhill. Still have to add in the exchange piece but for now it looks like a software issue on something I had loaded already.

Is there are problem with loading from a 3G backup to a 3GS ?

I am having the same problem. I can't even get through the day, where it used to be no problem. Something with 3.1 seems to be sucking the life out of the battery. Any fixes?

When I installed 3.1 on my GS, batter life went to about 1/2 day with only a few calls. My local apple store reset the phone to its factory settings, which helped. Now I get a little over a day, still very unsatisfactory. I understand that there is a battery life logger app from Apple; any idea how to get it so I can see what is draining the battery?

I´m here to report, that after installing the OS 3.1, the battery life got very bad. I would say it last about half of the time now. Got me in trouble on a vacation trip. Yes, i tried all the little tips - won´t do anything for me, since i had all those settings on OS 3.0

The Phone uses a lot of energy even on total stand-by - Wow - this is very bad.

Summary: Pre 3.1 upgrade a charge would last 18 hrs. Post 3.1 upgrade a charge lasts about 6 hrs

I have a 3g and use the same 5-10 apps on a daily basis. I use them the same amount each day, the same time & the same length (on average). I never have Bluetooth on, but always have Wifi and Location Services on.

Before upgrading to 3.1 I'd have to charge my phone 1x every 1.5 days.
After upgrading I have to charge my phone TWICE EVERY DAY! Once in the morning, and once at night.

This is ridiculous. I charge it in the morning when I first get into the office. I use it infrequently from 9-4, typically just checking native apps like Calendar, email. If I'm going straight home from work I wait to charge it when I get home. Otherwise I have to charge it around 3pm so it'll last me long enough to make it until 6pm. And then I still have to charge it again to make it until 6am.

Out of interest, did you restore your new iPhone from a backup of your old one ?

Ditto with all of the above. a 2 Hour church service rendered the iPhone from 100% to 68%, and it was not used. It also COMA'd later that day before I could get to a charger

I thought my problem was fixed with a full discharge and then a full power up. It was on about 60% before work this morning. I got it out at lunch and it was on 15%.

I took a look at my usage stats and it's saying I've received 168 MB of data. I can't remember what it said this morning, but considering I've only had the phone a month and don't even live in a 3G area, there's no way I've downloaded that much.

I do work in a 3G area though, so I can only assume it was trying to download something all morning at work, or the reading is wrong. I'm sure it only said about 20 MB last week.

I restored mine from previous back up, reset network settings, did a hard reset and let the battery run down completely. It now seems to be back in the normal range. Don't know if any one of the things I did mattered or whether it was everything together.

I maybe wrong but after seeing these issues my iPhone OS 3.0.1, I beleive my original iPhone (1st Gen) is experiencing the exact same issues as stated below. My original impression was that the phone is over 2 years old and may need a new battery but I now believe it is caused from the update.

It was immediately after updating to OS 3.0.1 that my phone started dying before the end of the day, that for me is very unusal.
