Error: iTunes requires a newer version of Apple Mobile Device Support.

Yesterday, I upgraded to iTunes 9 x64 (running Windows 7). The installation went fine and iTunes seemed to be working great until I plugged in my iPhone. When I plug it in, rather than showing up under my devices, I get an error message popping up:

iTunes requires a newer version of Apple Mobile Device Support. Please uninstall both Apple Mobile Device Support and iTunes, then install iTunes again.

I have tried to uninstall the Apple Mobile Device Support with little success and tried running the repair for the iTunes install, but I still have failure. I am worried about losing all of my iTunes data if I uninstall - I recently switched over to a different OS installation and copied my iTunes config information (XML docs and stuff) - it kept my library intact, but sneakily reset my iPhone to a way old configuration and deleted most of my data from it.

So... (1) has anyone else run into this and overcome it, and (2) how can I follow the directions [uninstalling/reinstalling] without losing my data, computer authorization with iTunes, etc.?

Thanks

Custom-built PC, Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600, 8GB RAM, Other OS, Windows 7

No helful information for you im afraid but i have just upgraded to iTunes 9.0.0.70 having firmwared my iPhone to 3.1 and am getting the same issue.

My PC is a recently rebuilt 32bit Vista installation which has untill now been running without issue.

I did notice when installing iTunes, it seemed to take ages to install and at one point performed a "roll-back" before completing "successfully".

Information on the forums points to other people having this issue in the past with no further assistance from apple and winding up rebuilding pc's 😟

Ok, here is what seems to have worked for me. I was not able to uninstall AMDS from the control panel, because it was generating a fatal error. I then stopped all apple related services, and then did a repair installation. This allowed me to uninstall AMDS, but when I went to repair Itunes...it didn't reinstall AMDS.

I then uninstalled everything related to Apple, Itunes, Bonjour, Apple software update, Apple application support, the Iphone Configuration utility. I then installed Itunes 9 from the downloaded file, and it opened fine. I then connected my iphone and it synced fine as well. It's downloading the 3.1 firmware now and I will disconnect and reconnect once that is installed to make sure it's all still working.

Hopefully this works for the rest of you.

p.s. I didn't reboot at all during the uninstall of all services and reinstall.

Hi Guys. Listen to what worked for me
- Go to Control Panel/Administrative Tools/Services/ and stop Aple Mobile device service from running
- Then go to C:\ProgramData\Apple\Installer Cache and delete all previous Apple Mobile Device Support folders that contains installation archives
- Extract AppleMobileDeviceSupport.msi from iTunesSetup.exe using WinZip or anything else
- Run the msi et voila Everything works fine when you open Itunes and connect your phone or pod

I suppose that the existence of Installer cached items wouldn't let the installation included in iTunesetup.exe to complete
Hope it ill work for you
Cheers

I have Windows Vista 64 bit and Apple Mobile Device support will not install no matter what. It gets to the end of the "copying new files" stage and then starts the "rolling back action" and ends saying "the installer encountered errors before Apple Mobile Device support could be configured."

All of the other components of iTunes 9 installs just fine but without AMDS I can't connect my phone. I've tried everything posted so far and no luck. Looks like I may be stuck going back to iTunes 8.

I still have a problem with AMDS. I have uninstalled iTunes, Quicktime, and the rest of the items called out in the apple KB and deleted the installer cache. Then I ran reg cleaner and windows install cleanup. I rebooted and then reinstalled iTunes. Everything seemed to install properly, but then when I plug in the iPhone, I get the same message "iTunes needs a newer version of AMDS". I then tried running the AMDS file that I extracted, but it does a rollback at the very end and gives me a message that the system was not modified. Same thing when I have tried to install the iPhone configuration utility.

I am at a loss now. Have I missed something????????

Same problem here running Vista Ultimate x64, SP2.

I even tried running the AMDS installer from an elevated admin command prompt, and that didn't do the trick either.

Looking in the event viewer where the MSI installer reports the fail, I found the following (under the details tab):

Anyone have any suggestions?

Ok, I found the fix (at least for me) to get AMDS to install on Vista Ultimate x64.

I had to log in to the Adminstrator account and run the installer from an elevated command prompt.

Yes, I know it shouldn't matter since I tried running it from an elevated command prompt from within my regular account (which should be the same thing), but it did.

Try that dg3274 and see if it works.

Manu214: That did the job, thank you.

Those of you having trouble extracting the installer archive, try 7zip, a popular open-source freeware archive manager. ( http://www.7-zip.org/)

The rest is as Manu214 stated:

1) Exit iTunes.
2) Stop the service via the control panel (or you can go to Start->Run and type "services.msc" without the quotes).
3) Delete C:\ProgramData\Apple\Installer Cache\Apple Mobile Device Support .
4) Right click and extract the iTunes64 installer to a folder.
5) Execute AppleMobileDeviceSupport64.msi
6) Start the Apple Mobile Device Support service back up

After this you should no longer see the message when connecting your iPod to iTunes9.
