No such problem here.

Try restoring your iPhone with iTunes from your iPhone's backup.

If no change after that, try restoring your iPhone with iTunes as a new iPhone or not from your iPhone's backup. If there is a problem with your iPhone's backup, restoring your iPhone from your iPhone's backup will also restore the problem.

don't use the recent backup it will simply recreate the issues

you'll programs will still ALL be there, so if you downloaded some that you deactivated they will come back. you can remove them again.

mobileme will solve all other important issues.

what will you lose?

passwords, notes, program preferences/data (such as my jogging program), how icons are organized ect.

do full reset on phone, took about one hour and then hook to itunes to activate. you'll see an option to active as NEW phone and you can change the name there. not sure if the name change is 100% needed but i did it to play it safe.

Thanks for the speedy response.
Do you have the new version of iTunes with the homeshare option and app page organizer view? Can I sync after the new phone reset to get back my tunes, playlist, apps etc.?

Currently the only thing I seem to be missing is VisVmail and maybe battery life is worse than previous. I will get it back to OS 3.01 right?

Sep 16, 2009 6:34 PM in response to Tstack

yes i have the latest itunes to move around the apps, but i doubt its required.

all items in your play lists and such can be reassigned to that phone no problem, nothing changes on itunes so all that can be re-associated.

no you will not go back in firmware, you can never go back but the 3.1 will work like a charm. speed will be back and 90% of the battery life will come back as same as 3.01 in my experience.

Are you new to the world of cause and effect? we can easily blame it because some of us are very experienced technology experts that know the symptoms of cause and effect.

do you think there are hundreds or thousands of people with the same symptoms after the upgrade and there not be correlation? I have 3 on the same floor with the same issues after the same upgrade to 3.1.

I don't think a "reinstall" of the firmware is an easy option for most people either.

i'm some of you always assume operator error or have you heads a bit to far up the apple core butt, but this happens to even the best of companies all the time. accept it.

thanks again for the help.
I am half tempted to force ATT to give me an RMA and go into the local Apple store for a replacement. Suspect it will come with 3.01. That OS would be preferred.
Did you have anything unsanctioned on your iPhone before the upgrade? I had worked the internet tether back onto the phone. Perhaps that's why the upgrade didn't take completely?
ie:VisVmail not working properly?
A friend mentioned he thinks this upgrade was targeting "jailbreak" and other hacks or unlocked phones?

Sep 16, 2009 7:11 PM in response to Tstack

That would be the only solution if you know for a fact they hae 3.0 or 3.01...but would it hurt to try this fix if it works?

My system is stock, no hacks or jailbreaks. on a 3G 16Gb. I did have the tether hack running when I had the 3.0 developers addition on the system but that was broke with the 3.01 upgrade.

I have no clue what VisVmail may be!

As far as you buddies theory it just a theory and I can see no reason why they would care if we jailbreak or not, and that is my theory...no better or worse then his. Most jailbreak people know better to update anyways until the "smart guys" work out the details. Apple knows there will be hacks and jailbreaks till the day the phone ends it life cycle so although the developers may have some joy messing with hackers their programing is most likely not focused on that.

Apple would never purposely make the phone run poorly even for those with hacks. it servers them no purpose and it would be a marketing disaster...

TO ANYONE WHO HAD THE BEN.M INTERNET TETHER OPTION INSTALLED BEFORE YOU UPGRADED TO 3.1

Running faster, etc. Phone fixed.
Found in another forum that if you have the Ben.m Internet Tether option installed your Visible Vmail (VisiVmail) won't work.

All you have to do is go into Network and there is an ATT profile that you click on and hit the remove button. Some type of Ben.m control panel enabler app (like Europe) for internet tethering. Rebooted the phone and all is well! Hope it lasts!

Still would like to have 3.01 back with my tether application working !! If you haven't upgraded...Don't !!

I've experienced all the same issues. I have found a site that has old firmware and it's a very easy process to downgrade.

1/ Open iTunes.
2/ Option-click the Restore button.
3/ Select the file downloaded from a site that links to content on the Apple site http://felixbruns.de/iPod/firmware/
4/ Click OK
5/ And that should be it

....

6/ But alas, no.

After 5 attempts it is still failing. I get an error saying that the firmware cannot be installed.

Any ideas?

cheers

Gideon

Am I new to the world? Nope not at all, but if you're going to point the blame then so do it, you won't get anywhere.

If hundreds or thousands of people are having the same issue then were are they? I can only see a handful in this discussion forum, it seems as though there are a minority with issues with the SW Update including yourself and you CANNOT blame 3.1 update because you have to consider many possibilities before making assumptions:

--- iPhone is slow? How do you charge the battery? It's like having a TV remote control with low battery it will be slow to respond, change the battery and it will have a high percentage of working better. In the iPhone's case, calibrate the battery as it should be charged, once it reaches 5-10% charge for 2-3 hours and repeat this process to calibrate the battery.

--- Disk space, how much is left on the device?

--- What steps have you tried to perform to resolve the issue? You ask if I was new to the world, even if I was I'd make sure to follow Support Articles provided by the vendor to help resolve the issue...

--- And yes a Reinstall of the firmware is an easy option, obviously if you are not comfortable with performing this step as suggested and will be suggested by AppleCare Agents then there is no point whinging about this issue, no offence but I'm only trying to help people as much as I can here but there is no official evidence that the 3.1 upgrade is the exact cause here, if you can determine any better then I'd like to hear your suggestion otherwise there is no point flaming when someone needs assistance...

Gideon, try a new user account on your computer, that will create a new library of your iTunes and will download a fresh copy of your Firmware again. Make sure of the following as well -

--- You have a decent Internet connection
--- Close down firewalls and idled applications on your computer
--- Connected your iPhone to a high speed USB port (determine this in Device Manager for Windows PC's)

Give that a try and give me an update if you can.

3.0 and 3.1 do not dance well with the iPhone 3G. I've been trough several iPhones. 7 to be exact each one was ruled out defective.

I ran 3.0 on my old 3g and the frame rate was noticeably slow. That consensus was deemed correct by my collegues, friends, and the Genius at the store.

I use my iPhone for work and personal use. In order to not put up with the new lag, I sold my old 3G which was only purchased in April. I bought the new 32gig 3gs and it responds far better.

I'm not upgrading to 3.1 until I know it's worth it.

As a side note, this community seems to follow Apple blindly. Apple does appreciate customer feedback. If someone considers it a 'brick' then that shows more concern that it's not what the customer expected from such an innovative company.

Listening to feedback, (not watering it down) is how they are the leader in the business.

Sep 18, 2009 11:56 PM in response to Flemming Rasmussen

I don't know why you think the community follows Apple blindly; there might be some of it, but I don't see much evidence of it in this thread.

I do agree though everyone should complain to Apple loudly through the feedback pages; even if you don't get an acknowledgement.

But restoring as new does seem to have cured my problems - but I didn't have that many passwords to enter.

I notice from the dropdown menu beneath that Apple thinks the world stopped with 3.0.1. Perhaps they know something ...

Tevor, This is an easy one to answer. Anyone who posts on Apple forums quickly learns there are always "fan"atics who are often not very technical who don't understand software, hardware, etc who say stupid things like, "you and your computer (phone) are the problem" and they ignor the fact 1001 logically thinking people have the same issue.

It's not the first time we've seen these comments in a thread. I don't think he said EVERYBODY but there are alway a few in the bunch.

Seldom do you see these people on the 3rd party forums but they are there to, just not as often as these offical Apple forums.

To get back on topic...

I'm rather surprised a "new" install didn't fix you on any level. It fixed 3 in my office almost 90% back to normal but we still notice battery drain but latency issues are back to 3.0/3.01 levels.

Lastly, did anyone else get an email from Apple asking to fill out a tech form on comments from this (and other) posts? I don't see anyone commenting on it...so maybe there were only selected people who got an inquiry from them.
