HP ScanJet scanners: ETA for new drivers?

In another thread, Andrew the HP Mac Architect said:

"Scanjet drivers are not included in the (Snow Leopard) OS (10.6). We are working hard on them and I hope to have an ETA sometime next week. At this point (other then reverting to 10.5) you are limited to third party options like VueScan. ($39)

Before I purchase VueScan, I thought I'd check-in: *When should we expect those ScanJet drivers?* Also, if anyone knows of a free option, I'd appreciate knowing about it.

And like everyone else, I appreciate that Andrew's "just trying to help," but I'd like to express my disappointment in Apple & HP for rendering my HP devices useless.

In fact, it'd be nice if future Apple OS upgrades included a pre-purchase preflight where the computer (or sexy Apple website) scans your devices (and AirPort configuration) for compatibility before you run out and install the new OS. I'm not a techie -- I wish I had known to check this forum prior to installing Apple Vista on my Mac.

While my Scanjet 5550c's operability survived intact through the upgrade to 10.6, it broke after the recent 10.6.1 update. Scan Pro 6.1.3 (PPC) would open OK but said it "could not initialize scanner."

So after numerous uninstalls and reinstalls, I did some thing similar to Leon's Twain SANE trick. I installed all of the 10.6 downloads from the sane website. When I installed them, one of them, sane-backends I think it was, said it there was a newer version already present but I installed over it. Afterwards, I reinstalled with HP Installer 4500 5550 COL10836a.dmg but afterward Scan Pro would not open saying "necessary files not installed or corrupted." I remembered that the Scanner Installation app did not do a full install before it restarted my Mac...[the former and latter used to happen in Tiger when I had a second scanner---a AIO PSC 1510 whose installation software would overwrite the 5550 or 5550's software would just "corrupt" after installing update say Quicktime.]

So I did a right click to open Scanner Installation and found the subinstaller app Scan Jet 4500. After running that subinstaller, the 5550 worked when I opened Scan Pro 6.1.3.

All is fine now.

As side note, I found SANE appeared in Preview's Import from Scanner menu choice next to my 1510 and in Image Capture. (I see Twainbridge running in Activity Monitor) However, it would only open the 5550 scanner but hang on "Overview Scan."

What the **** is wrong with HP and Apple? This morning I was able to use my HP Scanjet G4050 scanner using 10.6.0, but this afternoon after I "updated" to 10.6.1 I can no longer use my G4050 scanner????? This morning I could not use my HP Deskjet 5550 printer under 10.6.0, but this afternoon I could not use it under 10.6.1!!! I had NO notice that this would happen as I updated my OS...it would have been nice to be warned. I have another printer (Epson Stylus Photo R280) that I can use under 10.6.1, but I do not have another scanner. The HP Tech Support Chat was useless. He/she spoke english as a second language and had nothing to tell me of any use. This should be a simple fix, but I'm afraid we'll be waiting and waiting for HP to get their act together.

David, I see you got struck by the 10.6.1 update. On the one hand the update added HP Printers that did not make it into SL DVD. On the other, as with my Scanjet 5550, the scanner broke.

I am curious what happens when you try use the G4050. Do you get a dialog box saying it can't locate the scanner or missing software.

Based on the success I had and Leon achieve installing the set of Twain-SANE files, I suggest you give that a try. Install SANE packages and re-install 10.5's G4050 software. If after you get a dialog box saying missing or corrupt scanner software, the find try using the subinstaller for G4050 within the main installer package.

Good luck!

When I try to use my HP Scanjet G4050 under OS X 10.6.1 (via HP Scan Pro version 7.4.5) I get the following pop up message: "ERROR Sorry, scanner could no be initialized. (Scanner not found.)"

When I try to use the G4050 under OS X 10.6.1 (via VueScan version 8.4.85) I get the following pop up message, "VueScan quit unexpectedly. Click Reopen to open the application again. Click Report to see more detailed information and send a report to Apple....". I then went to the VueScan web site and downloaded the most recent version of VueScan (version 8.5.28) and I get the exact same message as I did with the prior version. So much for the newest version being compatible with OS X 10.6.1

I've wasted way too much time trying to get this to work.

Thank you for suggesting the work-around, but I really don't have the time this week to mess around with this.

As per the issue description, I understand that you would like to obtain scanner software for HP scanjet G4050 with MAC operating system, am I correct?

NOT 10.6

David, since the scanner is out of warranty therefore the support would be provided on the chargeable basis. However, the issue is related with the scanner software availability therefore I would provide the information. The scanner software has not been released yet and would be published on HP website once it is released.

[Saturday, November 21, 2009 11:43 PM] -- David Dobrzynski says:
that information is useless to me....has HP told you WHEN the software is going to be released? Their web site says late October....did they really mean October 2010????

If you, like me, are ****** off about how poorly HP is handling/not handling this scanner functionality issue then I suggest that you email the CEO, Chairman, and the Board of Directors of HP. I just finished sending my email to all of them. You can do the same by going to the web site listed below and follow the instructions on that web page. When I sent my messages I typed, "Do you care that HP is losing customers?" in the SUBJECT line of my email. I seriously doubt that this will result a solution to our problems, but at least you can let them know that they have lost another customer.

Thank you for that link David. My HP Scanjet 2400 has been standing useless for many weeks now. It also still fails to work properly with my husbands Vista laptop, taking about 20 minutes to think about scanning, if this is still the situation with Vista I'm not holding out much hope for it ever working with SL. Think I may just buy a scanner from another company
