Updated to itunes 9: now Airtunes won't connect,

I unfortunately do not recall the last version of itunes I had.... it wasn't very old though.

The only reason I updated to 9 last night was the itunes store forced me to in order to get a new episode. Anyways...

after the update, upon starting iTunes, i get this dialogue:

"The software required for communication with this ipod is not installed correctly...."

Then it asks me if I want it to repair. I say yes and it supposedly repairs it. If I restart itunes, it will say this error every single time.

I also cannot connect to my Airpor Express as a speaker output. it is listed, and when I select it, it brings up the 'connecting' dialogue which goes on FOREVER until I cancel it. ***?!?

I've uninstalled itunes, apple application support AND apple mobile device support and reinstalled itunes. I've unplugged the airport express; re-configured it using the Airport utility, updated the firmware and still I have both of these problems after all this.

WHY OH WHY did itunes make my update to download new store episodes...

Can anybody help me diagnose this?

Thanks
Ryan

Having the same problem. The only thing that changed in my setup between last weekend (when everything worked) and this weekend (when my external speakers aren't working) is the iTunes 9 upgrade. Before that, I was able to listen to my iTunes on my external speakers with no problem.

My setup is: iMac running 10.5 --> Time Capsule --> Dlink Router --> Airport Express --> Stereo System

Same problem here, as well. I'm running 10.6.1 and have 1 Airport Extreme (bridged, handling DHCP), 1 Time Capsule, and 4 Expresses, all running in N. AirTunes stopped working after upgrading to iTunes 9, before that everything worked like a charm. I can see all the Airports both via AirPort Utility and iTunes, but connection attempt to any of the Expresses end up in 'unknown error' (-15000).

Not happy with Apple bringing a few new features with their updates, but simultaneously braking a few old ones...

Cheers,
Sami

There's something very shady going on, really. First I updated my MBP to 10.6 (and sub-sequently to 10.6.1), and iTunes + AirTunes worked just fine. I then updated my Mac Mini to 10.6 and things still went smoothly (two separate iTunes Libraries). I didn't update to iTunes 9 right away it was out, but when I did, things got all weird...

After upgrading my MBP to iTunes 9, the AirTunes just refused to work giving me 'unknown error' (-15000). Multiple retrys, multiple reboots (of my MBP) to no avail. I then updated my Mac Mini to 10.6.1 (still on iTunes 8.2.1), and it too stopped working... Then I used the AirPort Utility on my Mac Mini to reboot the AX I was trying to stream to, and... IT WORKED!

After that, I tried to stream from my MBP. Nogo. Then, just a few minutes later, I rebooted that same AX again, now using the AirPort Utility from my MBP, and... IT WORKED!?!? So, there's certainly something within these updates (10.6, 10.6.1, iTunes 9.0) that breaks the AirTunes...

I usually don't (have to) reboot my AirPort devices so often, because they "just work", so that was not the first thing to try. But because there was nothing else left for me to try, I tried, and this time it seemed to pay of.

But it seems that even the AX reboots (were they performed by unplugging/plugging the AX, or with AirPort Utility?) haven't helped some of the users, but for me it did. Hope this helps! 🙂

Having a similar issue, with intermittent connection. The Airport Express (802.11n version) shows up in iTunes 9 and does play, a few bars at a time.

According to iTunes, it has a consistent connection to the AE. The music, however, keeps dropping. Hoping for a bug fix, and sorry I updated before the .1 bug release ...

However the title of this forum is "Installing & Upgrading iTunes for Windows" - and being on topic, I and several others are having issues where ITunes 9 for Windows behaves very differently than ITunes 9 for Mac.

This occurred on my 10.6.1 Mac, it is not a Windows-specific issue.

We are a pure OS X environment and it is not working fine.

True I just noticed that but I was in the forum for Using iTunes for Mac looking for AirTunes and this thread was displayed (even when restricted thread search to Using iTunes for Mac)
Must admit I did not look at the forum name at the top as it was already referring to both Windows and Mac installations.
The issue could be placed in a generic forum for both platforms.

I have the same problem with 10.6.1 / iTunes 9 and an older Airport Express plugged in via Ethernet.

Interestingly I tried Airfoil which is a third party app to stream audio from any application to an Airport Express and it works fine. So this seems to be a problem just with iTunes.

I'll be following this thread to see if anything changes for people.
