Smart Playlist order not respected on ipod nano after upgrade to iTunes 9
I have built a set of smart play lists that have worked since iTunes 7 that include all unlistened podcasts and sorts them by release date. Before upgrading to iTunes 9 the playlist maintained this order on my Nano. Since the upgrade the playlist sorts by name. I have tried restoring the ipod and choosing "copy to play order" still sorted by name on the Nano and by release date on iTunes. Any one have any ideas?
Sorry, no answer here, but I'm having the same problem on my iPhone. Podcast smart playlist sorted in chronological order - it shows just fine in iTunes, but in a different order (not alphabetically, interestingly) on the iPhone.
Just updated to iPhone 3.1.3 and still no fix. When I turned off live updating the sort order and the playlists are respected (after 3.1.3 update I could not even get a smart playlist to show up on iPhone playlists without turning off live updating).
Seems like Apple is not trying to resolve this issue.
What worked for me (iPod Classic, same problem) was this: clicking on the iPod "Podcast" Tab while the iPod is connected, there is a window at the bottom named "Include Episodes from Playlists". Smart Playlist that are selected here, appear on my IPod in the same order as in iTunes.
Adding the new rule "Playlist" "is not" "Music" solves the problem for me where I want to have a smart playlist maintain the release date sort order !!!
All the solutions presented will often correct the order problem on the ipod/iphone, but they break functionality on one or the other.
I have an Ipod Classic 160gb and an iphone.
The sort order problem on the iphone cannot be solved without a 'playlist is' condition in the smart playlist, or turning off 'live updating' - both these changes break the live updating feature on the classic, whereby songs do not update from playlists on the fly. ie. song disappears from list after playing if 'playcount is 0' is a playlist condition.
It seems I can't have live updating on my ipod as well as have the sort order correct on my iphone.
It's a known bug in the firmware of the devices, and Apple has not solved the problem in any way, despite it happening in all instances of the problem as far as I can tell.
