iPhone 3G w/ OS 3.1 - Problems (Slow operation)

I have the same problem. I upgraded to the 3.1 OS from 3.0.1. My iPhone 3G is not unlocked or jailbroken. After the update, the phone's functionality slowed severely. Pressing the home button, side scrolling to other home screens, placing calls, and internet connectivity all were severely slowed down.

I have iTunes 9.0 installed on a Mac Mini with Snow Leopard 10.6.1

I then, restored the phone using the iPhone restore option and then restored using last saved backup. No improvement.

I then decided to restore to full factory settings again and setup the phone as new. Some improvement noted, but as soon as I started installing apps again the slow response (in all the aspects above), returned.

I have one of the (recently removed) free memory apps, MemoryInfo, and it seems the phone on its idle state is using above 95% of the total memory. I did also notice severe battery usage, after just 2hrs of idling the phone the battery drained to 65%.

Apple Engineers - If you do read this, please issue a patch for OS 3.1 or allow us to downgrade to OS 3.0.1 until this problem is resolved.

Thank you.

To anyone who's considering restoring their phone to fix this, I'd recommend that you don't bother. I did a complete restore of my iPhone which took about an hour with some occasional manual intervention.

The hanging problem is just as bad as ever. Seems to be worst when using the ever unreliable 02 data coverage, not as bad when in range of shared wifi, and almost not an issue when in range of fast non-shared wifi.

More wasted effort to work around what is almost certainly a show stopper bug in iPhone OS 3.1. How did this get released with this major bug in it? Why is the iPhone so bad at multi-tasking? Isn't the kernel Unix based? Is it the Cocoa layers above this that are flakey?

This is the last iPhone update I'll be beta testing without my knowledge. Someone else can be the guinea pig. In future I'll just wait for a few days to see if other people have problems.

My guess is that the iPhone OS 3.1 is attempting to sync calendars in the background but this syncing actually blocks all other activity, including unlocking the phone, until it receives a response from Mobile Me or shared calendar servers. It also seems to be bad when on the cusp of a wifi signal flipping between wifi and 3G, so maybe wifi negotiation and testing the wifi connection are factors.

Ever since I updated my 3G to OS 3.1, the phone functionality has severely slowed is a lot less responsive (iPod won't play, Phone won't dial, battery status does not change until the phone had died). The only way I can occasionally get any improvment is doing a hard reboot.

Does anyone have any information about this and potential fixes from Apple or other users?

Same here. Slide to unlock slow to move, sometimes not at all. Apps seem to be a little slow to open.
Also, battery life is now terrible. Ran it completely down on Sat, then charged it overnight. Used on and off Sun with battery meter showing about normal drain, went to bed showing about 80%. By 7:00 this morning it had shut its self off do to no charge.
As with other posts, this all looks like it started when I went to the new 3.1OS.

I'm also having the same issues reported here. I've been forced to use my old Sony Erickson flip phone that's over 5 years old. It works over 3G and I can send MMS Messages on it. Oh, and it doesn't crash.

This is VERY Frustrating. The iPhone is an Excellent device that I've found myself feeling totally naked without. We pay a lot of money for the service to use this device, and it should work. An update that we have no choice but to use if we would like to utilize all of the features, that doesn't work is pathetic. I feel very upset about this. Obviously I'm not alone here, either...

very disappointing! I had iPhone 3G working perfectly fine! after 3.1 update, I have to recharge it 3 times a day, nothing works fine, sometimes I even can not answer a call cuz it does not respond to the slide. contacts or sms takes atleat 30 sec to open. sometimes it freezes just like that. battery dies very quickly!
and I hate to have to trick apple to give this device back with hate and not to recommend it to anyone any more!

Same problem went to apple store on 25th they acted like they had no clue about the problem. They then went a step further and found that the bottom water detector had turned red. The top one was still white. At this point all the wanted to do was sell another phone or pass the buck to att and get new sim card.
THE PROBLEM STARTED AFTER THE 3.1 UPDATE!!!!!!!!!!!
Either let us have 3.0 back or fix your problem. As you can see by all these post its not your customers fault. I have stopped the phone from losing its network. Disable 3G and go back to edge.
Maybe no one has asked nicely, PLEASE

UPDATE: I'm definitely getting this problem less. The main change I've made is to make sure wifi is switched off unless in a very reliable wifi coverage area (like at home). I suspect that searching for wifi connections and/or validating their connectivity is one of things causing the iPhone to hange. This hanging is definitely new to OS 3.1, though.

This means that the bundled wifi I get with my O2 contract is much less useful as I have to remember to re-enable wifi. BT wifi is already pretty unusable due to BT's moronic decision to give all their different kinds of wifi hotspots the same name, even though only some of them are usable with O2.

I own 2x iPhone 3G's and I have upgraded both units to OS 3.1. (SUPER BIG MISTAKE)

The one phone I use for work (in that I am on it 24/7/365) and the WiFi has stopped working (dose not authenticate to AP - and yes I did re-flash AP)Battery Life *** and has even switched off a few times (Hard reboot needed) - I did a Factory reset and re-flashed unit. And NO IT STILL ***...

The 2nd phone my wife uses (in that it makes calls every now and again) the WiFi works, it has not rebooted itself and the Battery Life looks to be ok...

NOW WHAT THE F... IS GOING ON WITH THE SOFTWARE... NOTE: Both iPhone are 3G/16Gb units.

APPLE PLEASE REPLACE OS 3.1 GIVE US 3.X (BUGFIX-MAX) 😉

I had the same problem. I upgraded to the 3.1 OS from 3.0.1. My iPhone 3G is not unlocked or jailbroken.

The worst case was that my latest call was cut off, and after a reboot, no more mobile/cell reception was available. I have to restore the phone using the iPhone restore option and then restore using last saved backup. And I have to restore to full factory settings again and setup the phone as new.

That brought the improvement, but the mobile/cell reception proceed not so good as normal. And not so good as OS 3.01

I think the bug is that my Phon has lost the APN, so that no connection to t-mobile was available.
