iPhone 3G w/ OS 3.1 - Problems (Slow operation)

I have the same problem. I upgraded to the 3.1 OS from 3.0.1. My iPhone 3G is not unlocked or jailbroken. After the update, the phone's functionality slowed severely. Pressing the home button, side scrolling to other home screens, placing calls, and internet connectivity all were severely slowed down.

I have iTunes 9.0 installed on a Mac Mini with Snow Leopard 10.6.1

I then, restored the phone using the iPhone restore option and then restored using last saved backup. No improvement.

I then decided to restore to full factory settings again and setup the phone as new. Some improvement noted, but as soon as I started installing apps again the slow response (in all the aspects above), returned.

I have one of the (recently removed) free memory apps, MemoryInfo, and it seems the phone on its idle state is using above 95% of the total memory. I did also notice severe battery usage, after just 2hrs of idling the phone the battery drained to 65%.

Apple Engineers - If you do read this, please issue a patch for OS 3.1 or allow us to downgrade to OS 3.0.1 until this problem is resolved.

Thank you.

How could Apple have messed things up this badly for so many people? If things are not rectified in the near future, I may be trying a warranty claim. The phone just isn't functioning as it is suppose to. I firmly believe it is 100% Apple's fault.

Phone is not jailbroken/unlocked. It has never been abused.

I think the basis of the problem is there is a flaw in the delivery; it is NOT 100% reliable; it may be 95-98% reliable which makes it through testing fine, but when mass-released to 50 million users, suddenly 1% is 50,000 people.

I don't think there is a serious bug with the firmware itself, or 1) a lot more people would have the problems and 2) the problems would not go away with re-install, etc.

I really hope that the end result of the 3.1 coma bug and the continuing problem that will never go away without a real fix, will be an iPhone Utility program that is DESPERATELY NEEDED, that would be the iPhone equivalent of Disk Utility; with tools like re-format, re-install firmware, and maybe fix permissions etc; the underlying issue causing MOST of everybody's problems here is based on the inability to do a clean-install of firmware using iTunes.

if you've already installed 3.1.2 i've started a thread HERE hyperlink) to continue discussion for post 3.1.2 issues.

Count me in as another user with a slow 3G. Mine is so bad that it's almost unusable. I have to reset it daily (pressing and holding Home & Lock until the Apple logo appears) just to be able to use it some what normally. I have tried restoring it as well to no avail.

For example, today I was walking on my lunch break with my iPod playing on my iPhone and received an SMS. The song began skipping and pausing while simply trying to wake the display. That took probably 5 to 10 seconds. Once I had the screen up with the SMS visible, going to the message to reply to it took another 10 seconds and multiple pause/skips. Ridiculous.

Unmolested 8GB 3G never jailbroken or anything else shady.

In my opinion this firmware, 3.1.2, was designed with the 3GS specifically in mind. With its upgraded processor and system memory, it doesn't need to work as hard. With the few differences between the 3G and 3GS, I opted to wait until June of '10 to see what may be in store for a next-gen iPhone if there is one. That said, I do not feel it is fair to feel forced to upgrade just to have a usable phone again.

Another here with weird iPhone 3G behaviour / performance. Only started since upgrading from 3.0 to 3.1 a few weeks ago..

Weird stuff such as when bringing the phone out of sleep after not using it for a while the display freezes up and I can't 'Slide to unlock' for a few seconds and other such stodgy glitches in the UI.

Mine is an iPhone 3G 16GB - like many others here, I've never jailbroken it or anything like that.. have intentionally only ever used the product legitimately!

Slightly disappointing to see that Apple are (predictably I guess) tight lipped about acknowledging any problem or suggesting that it's something they'll look into.

Same problem as all others with my 16GB 3G. Now about one year old, have the latest software 3.1.2. I spoke with a friend at Apple in October, he told me that Apple was working on a fix (at that time). The latest version was uploaded shortly after that -- which did not fix all of the crashing problems. Same thing -- crashing apps (including iPod of all things), locked up phone, memory lock ups. Help us Apple!!!

I have the same problem, sometimes I would hit the home key to end an app and nothing happens. after a number of attempts finally the app closes. Now leave the phone alone and the voice control pops up without me doing anything, the phone comes on and the ipod player pops up and goes away, the page scrolls, if you are using a app it automatically closes with out you hitting the home button. I had my phone actually completely lock up, did a hard reboot the phone went off but would not come back on, let it sit for awhile and hit turned back on.

Apple! This is not good. Fix this or I definitely don't want this device anymore.
