iPhone 3G w/ OS 3.1 - Problems (Slow operation)

I have the same problem. I upgraded to the 3.1 OS from 3.0.1. My iPhone 3G is not unlocked or jailbroken. After the update, the phone's functionality slowed severely. Pressing the home button, side scrolling to other home screens, placing calls, and internet connectivity all were severely slowed down.

I have iTunes 9.0 installed on a Mac Mini with Snow Leopard 10.6.1

I then, restored the phone using the iPhone restore option and then restored using last saved backup. No improvement.

I then decided to restore to full factory settings again and setup the phone as new. Some improvement noted, but as soon as I started installing apps again the slow response (in all the aspects above), returned.

I have one of the (recently removed) free memory apps, MemoryInfo, and it seems the phone on its idle state is using above 95% of the total memory. I did also notice severe battery usage, after just 2hrs of idling the phone the battery drained to 65%.

Apple Engineers - If you do read this, please issue a patch for OS 3.1 or allow us to downgrade to OS 3.0.1 until this problem is resolved.

Thank you.

I have the same problem with my iPhone 3G. After upgrading to iPhone 3.1 firmware, it takes a good 10 seconds to get the phone to respond before I can move the slider and log in which is very annoying. What is even worse is that when a call comes in, the screen is frozen and I can’t answer the call if I did not use the phone for some time. This has resulted in numerous missed business calls. I have reset the phone and even completely erased and restored it. Nothing changed in terms of the sluggish behavior. Under 3.0 everything was working ok.

As a phone, it is now basically useless since I can not receive calls with any reliability and it impacts my ability to conduct business. PLEASE Apple resolve this ASAP or give us a way to go back to 3.0.1.

I am in Hong Kong and my phone is the unlocked 16GB 3G model from the Apple Store.

Thanks.

My first backup after the upgrade to iTunes 9.0 and iPhone 3.1 was taking way too long, and then I found this thread and let out a huge sigh (did you hear it?).

However, I noticed this problem on the first sync only. In subsequent syncs (I sync often, sometimes multiples times per day) the backup takes only slightly longer than before, as best as I can recall. I'm loving some of the new features in 9.0. I've been waiting for a better device/applications options, and the wait is over!

*This is ridiculous.* They had to be aware of this. I'm not sure if 3GS users are experiencing problems, but obviously us 3G users are. It's especially upsetting since the new features are so minor and the "side effects" are huge.

I first noticed the lag when swiping to unlock the screen. At first I thought the touchscreen was broken, but rather, there was a 5 - 10 second delay to get to the home screen. Other delays occur when hitting the home button, or launching apps. Sometimes, the iPod app plays music on its own.

My battery life too drains very rapidly. I've experienced unexpected crashes and a fresh restart doesn't solve the problem. Synching takes forever and I give up on "backing up" which takes HOURS or overnight. Has Apple made any sort of statement? Is a fix coming?

Experiencing the same symptoms as everyone else: slow touch screen (jitters when switching between screens), slow wakeup, sticking unlock slider, apps running extremely slow and crashing. This is so random and intermittent too. Sometimes it is smooth sailing and other times it's essentially a brick because I can't get it to do anything. My iphone is not jailbroken. It is having problems more often than it is working properly.

I have the same issues on an iPhone 3G.

Upgraded to 3.1.

First, the sluggishness and reduction in battery life.

Turning off push notifications resolved the sluggishness and appears to temporarily resolved the batter life issue.

But in the last two days, the battery life issue has returned. Push notifications are still off. So is bluetooth.

Temporary solution--- restore ur phone using iTunes and use the backup( 3gs users might have to set it up a new user profile)..
@ I had to reduce by apps from30 to essential 18
@ have push on one email accnt
@ switch off notifications
@ turn off password
@ I have no media on my phone( no music, videos, photoes etc)
----
I did the above on my 3g and it works ok now, but I can't have my apps and the features.. So till apple bring a fix , I can survive with this.. Now my phone operations are ok email push works fine.. Yes I can answer and make calls now 🙂 hope this helps.. If not go back to 3.0.1.

I share the same problems. Well, about 75% of them. Unlocking or answering calls when in sleep mode lags 5-7 seconds almost every time. Wifi surfing actually seems to have sped up for me in 3.1 On the other hand there are numerous screen formatting errors and keyboard malfunctions when using safari and landscape mode.

Also, there is much trouble connecting to the cellular network at times, despite showing full signal. I do not experience the same extended backup times as most of you. I have synced about 3 times since 3.1 and itunes 9 updates.

This is really irritating me because when the phone doesn't work at least at the basic level as a phone then we've got major problems. I really hope Apple is hard at work on this. Really not happy about this one, especially considering all we got out of it was genius for apps.

Since my previous post to this thread, my phone seems to of finally stabilised and the 5 second delay hasn't occured for nearly 48 hours now. The wifi seems fine again too. I can't understand why the problem has ceased as I have done absolutely nothing to try and correct it. No restores, no factory resets, nothing. Bizarre. I'm running a 3G with the 3.1 update, and I was seeing both the long delay from coming out of standby, as well as wifi issues.

I'm just wondering if there was some background process that was affecting performance which has now stopped. Perhaps a search index rebuild? Just guessing why I had all these problems immediately after the update, and now the phone seems to of settled down again. I just hope it stays like this and the problems don't return. Anyway, as it stands, it would seem the problem has (at least for now) disappeared by dong nothing more than leaving the phone alone for a day. Weird.
