iPhone 3G w/ OS 3.1 - Problems (Slow operation)

I have the same problem. I upgraded to the 3.1 OS from 3.0.1. My iPhone 3G is not unlocked or jailbroken. After the update, the phone's functionality slowed severely. Pressing the home button, side scrolling to other home screens, placing calls, and internet connectivity all were severely slowed down.

I have iTunes 9.0 installed on a Mac Mini with Snow Leopard 10.6.1

I then, restored the phone using the iPhone restore option and then restored using last saved backup. No improvement.

I then decided to restore to full factory settings again and setup the phone as new. Some improvement noted, but as soon as I started installing apps again the slow response (in all the aspects above), returned.

I have one of the (recently removed) free memory apps, MemoryInfo, and it seems the phone on its idle state is using above 95% of the total memory. I did also notice severe battery usage, after just 2hrs of idling the phone the battery drained to 65%.

Apple Engineers - If you do read this, please issue a patch for OS 3.1 or allow us to downgrade to OS 3.0.1 until this problem is resolved.

Thank you.

This worked great and I thought it was "the" solution... until I went to use my calendar again. Once you try to access it (I tried to add an event), then the same problems start. I went through and deleted my MobileMe account info from the phone (again), and it has been working fine. That's great except it now removes about 80% of the functionality that I bought the **** thing for in the first place!

I suppose I could try to troubleshoot and figure out if it's just the calendar, contacts, etc., etc., but why bother - Apple should take responsibility for their incompetence and fix this ASAP. We users shouldn't be troubleshooting their faulty software. Skid should be compensated for finding out as much as he did!

So while I have a somewhat useful "phone" (the iPhone ***** as a mobile phone!), I'm still very much dissatisfied with what Apple has done with this 3.1 release!

First of all pardon my English. I got a 16 gigger iPhone 3G and have been suffering both a terrible battery life and random blackouts on it since installing iPhone OS 3.1 and iTunes9. I got four pages of apps but I use only a few on a daily basis. Got my iPhone since day 1 and the battery seems to have worsened since 3.0 but 3.1 makes it almost unusable. It operates under Telefónica/Movistar in Spain and it's for certain not an EDGE problem for there's no EDGE where I live, just GPRS and 3G.

iPhone turning off randomly has happened like thrice but I could clearly notice it once happened when plugging the earbuds because I had them stuck in my ears prior to insterting and I could notices a weird and loud noise. I checked et voila, it was turned off. Had to reboot it by pressing both home and lock for few secs.

Hope this gets solved soon, thank you so much.

We have 8 iPhones in the family from 1g to 3GS . The only phone which has experienced a problem is my personal one and the problem that i have encountered is the very poor WiFi performance .I use an external battery case ( InCase) because of chronic excessive battery drain but have had no crashes .My wife has a (white) 32G 3GS which is fine but she has very few apps .I have 7 pages of apps and for what it is worth I think therein lies the problem for many people .With 75000 apps in the store it had to happen sooner or later and I hope Apple fixes it soon

My batterylife is a disaster after upgrading to Firmware 3.1.
Before upgrading, with everything on (PUSH, 3G, Wifi etc), my battery lasted all day but after upgrading with the same settings it lasts about 1 hour!!!
And my Iphone 3 G gets really really hot after the upgrade!! There is somthing wery wrong with this firmware!!

Is there someone who knows how to get back to the earlier version (that worked...) please tell us!!

(Very happy with my Iphone but this kills the joy with it!) Shape up Apple!

I've had the 3G over a year, immediately after 3.1 I noticed significant battery drain. It's obvious from this forum that its not a coincidence. Those of us who use this phone 24/7 can spot a change instantly. APPLE needs to step up and offer a solution. I've disabled push, wifi etc (which was fine before) and no change. It's a problem.

Follow up:My problems have been predominantly with wifi and I use an external battery .I tried to initially solve these issues using http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1398 but this did not solve it and I did not wish to unsecure my airport network-interestingly it seems to be worse on airport networks than other wifi networks so in the end i suspect that this will be tied to network security protocols .
After various soft and hardware resets which would temporarily ameliorate the problem , I elected to remove most of the 84 apps that i have and save only the "essential"-about 30 apps .This appears to have "solved " the issue .When the smoke clears on this I suspect it will turn out to be an app software conflict .Hope this works for others

I too am seeing very poor battery life from my iphone.

One of the suggestions, disabling Fraud Warnings, as well as in turn disabling and reenabling 3G, Wifi, and then resetting network settings seems to have helped, but it still seems to be an issue. Previously, I could usually stretch my battery life for a couple days (given my usage). Now, I get about a day at most.

And yeah, performance is slower, though I think disabling Fraud Warnings helped with that.
