Multiple Mail Windows

I am seeing this too. If I enter Expose I will occasionally see several Mail windows where there was only one previously. Outside of Expose they are all right on top of one another. Happens only intermittently.

When I launch Mail from the dock, it opens up to 10 identical program instances. The subtle shadow around the window is very noticeable because of the overlapping windows. Cured it by trashing the dock icon and adding it. Just happened today after 1 week without it. Weird bug.

I am experiencing the same issue, six mail windows but if I close one of them the mail application hangs with the beach ball. Force quitting is the only way to restore mail but with the same 6 windows.

I'm experiencing the same issue... I only noticed it when I saw this heavy dark gaussian blur type area behind my Mail app and then noticed I had about 10 versions of the Mail window viewer open all at once... sometimes it's fine.... other times it isn't.... very irritating... if anyone find a workaround or gets to the bottom of the issue... please post.

It dawned on me this evening that I recently installed the beta version of letterbox for snow leopard/mail. This evening I also went and downloaded the latest beta of letterbox and installed it and my multiple mail browser window problem went away. If you have letterbox installed try the newer version here.

I am experiencing the same thing - exactly as described above. I also notice that in addition to running very slow, delayed reaction to any command, it is failing to run Rules.

Tried trashing the mail icon from the dock and launching from the app, no change. Repaired permissions, restarted, no change.

The strange thing is that it started yesterday when nothing else on the computer was changed/installed/updated. Been running 10.6.1 since it came out. Mail was working very well until this "Drop Shadow/multiple Message Viewer windows" problem began.

What is it?

Forget my comment about Rules - they are working just taking an extremely long time for Routing messages (as evident in the Activity Window).

This very annoying bug has been plaguing me since installing 10.6. This is a major error that Apple needs to fix ASAP. My Mail program opened up dozens of windows by itself tonight, froze up, and became useless!!! This has happened about a dozen times in 3 weeks. ******!!

Apple, please address this.

Apple can only fix it (assuming it is a bug) if they know about it.

i have this same problem: after mail is open for an unspecified amount of time, i find multiple application windows. i think this started with 10.6.1, but i can't remember if i had it with 10.6 (never had it with 10.5). i don't run letterbox, but i do run dockstar and mailfollowup.

Ditto. I'm getting 19 Inbox windows at once. No Letterbox installed. What actually more annoying is that when I quit Mail, my Dock is no longer functional. I'm working on removing recently added software to see if I can come up with a correlation. Giant PITA.

I'm getting two mail windows at once.

The problem doesn't happen in my wife's account on the same computer, so it must be something in mine.

I have Letterbox, GrowlMail, SpamSieve, and DevonMail bundles installed, BUT I have removed them all from the ~/Library/Mail/Bundles folder and I still experience the same problem. Have any of you been able to fix it?
