Will anyone who has this problem (multiple mail windows) please respond with the following information:

1) What plug-ins or bundles do you have installed (i.e. SpamSieve, Letterbox, GrowlMail, etc.)
2) What version of OS X are your running?
3) Does this problem occur in other user accounts on your computer? If you don't have other accounts, try creating one and see if it happens.
4) When did this problem start?
5) What have you tried to fix it?

**For me, the problem DOES NOT occur in my wife's user account on the same computer. This leads me to believe that it's somehow plugin or preference related, but I've tried removing all plugins/bundles and trashing the preferences file, and I still have the same problem.

1) dockstar; mailfollowup
2) 10.6.1
3) not sure, will report back if i end up testing
4) shortly after updating to 10.6.1; never happened in leopard, and i don't think it happened in 10.6.0
5) i tried mailbox->rebuild messages, which seemed to have helped once, but the problem came back; trashing both mail's and the dock's plists didn't help either. in a possibly related issue, mail occasionally crashes my dock, i.e., my auto-hide dock fails to appear, and cmd-tab stops working.

I have DockStar on 10.6.1 MacBook Pro.

I deleted DockStar and it didn’t fix it. Reinstalled.

Trashed my prefs and reset every darn thing up again and that fixed it... for a week... and now its back to many windows. Now only 4... but last time it got up to 19 and made Mail so slow it was unusable.

I don’t wanna trash my prefs again - and reset all my accounts and whatnot.. that is just unacceptable.

Something is obviously strange here. The fact that the problem doesn't exist on my wife's account on my computer suggests that it's not a problem with 10.6.1 itself. Otherwise, why wouldn't her account exhibit that behavior?

If that's true, it means it's something in my user account that's causing the problem. The plugins were the first obvious culprits, but removing them didn't fix it. I also trashed the plist files, but that didn't solve the problem in my case - even for a short time.

10.6.2 is due soon. Maybe we'll get lucky and it will fix the issue. But I'm not optimistic for the reasons I wrote above.

I've done everything imaginable to troubleshoot, with no success.

The fact that my wife does not have the same problem in her account on the same computer suggests that it isn't a problem native to 10.6, but some preference file, plugin, or setting somewhere in my account. If only I could figure out what that is.

Can't really report it as a bug to Apple when it isn't happening on another user account on the same computer.

Ok, this started working again for me before the 10.6.2 update so it isn’t that.

Here’s what I did:

1. Looked under the Window menu for how many ‘Inboxes’ were opened and pressed +W until all but one were closed. Then closed mail and re-opened.

2. Installed the latest version of DockStar (I, personally, think this is what the problem was all along).

Haven’t had the problem since, including after the 10.6.2 update.

Good luck, team.
