Canon MF4270 Still Doesn't Work

The Canon MF4270 printer still doesn't work on Mac OS X. I tried it on Leopard and now on Snow Leopard. It's been discussed on this forum before and they came up with a solution that worked for someone but apparently didn't solve the issue.

The solution they came up with was related to a Linksys wireless router. I, however, don't use Linksys. Also, I am able to print from PCs (both from Windows and Linux) through the same wireless router.

I tried to add the printer as an IP printer but it didn't work. I also tried to add it by clicking on the "More Printers" button. I typed in the address of the printer and a name in the "Queue Name" field and when I hit Add nothing happens. No error message, no beep, nothing.

I also installed Vista in a virtual machine on my Mac and it can print just fine so it definitely isn't the wireless connection. It's either a Mac issue or a Canon issue with their driver.

It is a Canon issue with the UFR2 driver. The driver has to communicate with the printer to determine what model you are trying to connect to. It does this because it doesn't give the user the ability to select a printer model. If it is unable to communicate with the printer, which occurs when you have it connected to the USB port of a wireless router, then it will fail to complete the printer queue creation. By contrast, the Windows driver doesn't work the same way and therefore allows the user to select the printer in the list to add.

But you should not have the same trouble with a machine that is connected via Ethernet. I have found that I can print to my MF4680 on Snow Leopard using the Canon UFR2 v2.00 driver. And I am still printing fine with Leopard using the v1.80 UFR2 driver. This is with my MF connected via Ethernet to the Airport Extreme base station.

Do you have the built-in Firewall enabled on your Mac? This could stop the driver from communicating with the printer.

My office now has a similar issue where the Canon MF4270 no longer works over an ethernet network for macintosh stations. Windows users are still able to print to it.

When I go through the motion of adding the Canon as a printer and then try printing a test page I receive the following message: Canon UFR II Printer Driver - The printer is not supported, or the printer information is not acquired correctly. If the printer is supported, check the printer connection, delete the printer, add it again, and acquire the printer information on the Print dialog box.: 10322.

I've attempted adding the printer with Leopard's firewall disabled, but I receive the same message.

Under the 'More Printers' tab, only Canon IPv6 (UFR II) shows up in the drop menu; this method of communication is apparently not supported with the MF4270 as it is not listed in the product list at the bottom of the IPv6 window.

Are there any new suggestions? Wait for and Apple patch? Thanks!

Hi,

I just bought my first Mac last week - it's a Macbook Pro and it is running Snow Leopard. I have the Canon MF4270 on my local network and it works fine with all my other printers.

I downloaded the v2.0.5 driver, but I still can't get it to work in Snow Leopard. I tried to follow the user guide but some of the screen shots also do not match up. Here is what I have tried:

I downloaded the v.2.0.5 driver and ran the URF II Installer.pkg. The installation completely successfully. From Print & Fax, I hit +. The only thing I see is Bluetooth DUN and after a few seconds the More Printers view pops up. From here I can see an Add Printer dialog, and the only protocol I can select is Canon IPv6 (UFR II). However, my network is only IPv4 (my printer is 192.169.0.77) and when I type the address I get "incomplete or invalid address". The list of printers also does not contain my MF4270 in this dialog - I see products such as: Canon iR-ADV C5030/5035 UFRII (US).

If I instead go to the dialog right after clicking +, I only see a Bluetooth DUN Fax printer. I can select the printer settings here to see there is a Canon MF4200 Series UFRII drivers available.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks,
Steve

Hello Steve,

This is the forum for OS X 10.5 (Leopard) printer issues. Since you have stated that you have OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard), then you should be posting this question on this forum.

FYI - you do not add the printer via More Printers. With the UFR2 v2.05 driver, you should be selecting IP for the protocol, then entering the printer IP address (192.169.0.77), a queue name of LP and then searching through the print using menu for the MF4200 series.

Sorry for posting in the wrong forum. I didn't want to do a duplicate post of the same problem so I decided to just continue on the thread that already existed.

I don't have any option to add an "IP printer". When I go to Print and Fax and hit Add, I don't have any options at the top of the dialog box that lets me pick IP. Anyway, I'll repost this.

cheers,
Steve
