iTunes 9 Smart Playlist 'Live Updating' bug

When syncing smart playlists that have the 'Live Updating' option enabled, the playlist that ends up on the iPhone with OS 3.1 or Touch with 3.1.1 does not match what shows up in iTunes. The temporary workaround is to disable the Live Updating option. That has terrible side effects though. But does anyone know if Apple is considering this a bug, or some kind of 'new feature'?

After many attempts I discovered by setting the rules in each Smart list to: 'playlist ...is...Music'
followed by 'limited to 25 items selected by 'Most Recently Added' (for example) the list synced
correctly to the iPod touch.

Thanks, Dave! I'm amazed that a customer was able to figure this out.

I added "playlist is not music" and "limit to 35 items" selected by "most recently added" and my podcast playlist now syncs to my iPod Touch (2nd) in the correct order without having to turn on / off "live updating" every time I want to sync my podcast smart playlist.

I'm disappointed that Apple has not been able to fix this bug (despite having announced that they had) after nearly a month. Does Apple not understand the issue? Think their customers are morons? Not care? Or what? By not communicating with customers, Apple lets customers reach their own conclusions....

Maybe I spoke too soon.

The podcasts do end up on my iPod Touch in the prescribed order. However, the iPod Touch now plays them as if shuffled -- but I didn't think shuffling them (like music playlists) was even an option. Random playing is not specified in iTunes for this playlist. The word "shuffle" & symbol do appear at the top of the iPod playlist, but it is not the blue/gray toggle that appears on music playlists, but (apparently) just skips to some random podcast when touched.

Has anyone else had this problem? Am I missing something? I use my iPod Touch mostly for listening to podcasts, and playing them out of order is very annoying.

Looks like if I want to hear them in the desired order I will have to go back to turning "automatic updating" on/off before syncing my iPod Touch. Either Apple doesn't understand their own product or doesn't care enough to fix something that had previously worked for years...

Roger,
You might want to try it without the "limit to 35 items" if you can. With OS3.0, I had that problem so I have done without the the "Limit to..." option ever since. If I remember correctly, it played them in order that they were added according to the "selected by..." option. In my case, podcasts were selected in order of lowest rating, so the lower-rated podcasts played first.

Thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately, it's not working for me.

I eliminated all the smart list rules except:
--> play count is 0
--> play list is not music [ this option is the one that appears to allow live updating
and correct order on the ipod]

and checked the "live updating" checkbox [ making the smart list "smart"]

No "limit to xx items".

I synced the ipod touch and gave it a try, starting with the first podcast. When it finished the first, it promptly jumped to the 13th. Back to turning off "live updating" before syncing. This appears to be the only way to get the podcasts to sync and play in the correct order. Of course you have to turn on live updating to get it to select new and delete old podcasts before turning off live updating again in order to sync correctly.

This is the biggest sh....
NO Liveupdating is working on my iPod 5 Gen 160GB with 'least recently played'-selection anymore! That was always working - For years now.
It even updated when changing from 'Shuffle' to 'Album Shuffle'.
Updating only happens after synchronising with my Mac.

I hoped, that Dave's iPhone Fix would help on the iPod, too - BUT BIW WAY.

APPLE, PLEASE fix it... This is essential !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I just got my audio only podcast playlist to work. The settings are:

check "match all the following"
media kind is podcast
play count is 0
kind does not contain video
check live updating

Now go to the podcast sync tab in your device menu and uncheck "automatically include..."

I have battled this for weeks now and finally got good results. Hopefully you will too.

This bug is really quite a pain, does anyone know about when the fix will be released by Apple?

I have 90+ smart playlists for my opera's, and iTunes just isn't set up properly for opera's. You need a smart playlist, to define by composer, opera, and then location. It's the best one can do considering the software.

So I got the new Nano to store some of the smart playlists, and they're fine in iTunes, but on the Nano, the opera's came across as a playlist and some came across as a smart playlist's. No real organization, everything a mess. I added "playlist is music" to the smart playlist's, but no fix.

For now I'm sticking with the IPOD at least the smart playlist stay the same and the operas are ordered. But if a fix comes out soon I'll be back to purchasing some Nano's.

Has anyone else had the problem where, when you sync from your ipod to your computer, everything that you played that day is lost? I mean the fact that you played the songs that day. I've had it happen where I bought music, played it on my ipod throughout the day, rated the songs, etc, to have them all put back as unplayed when I synched my ipod later that night. At first I thought it would only happen if I let a day go without synching it, but it happens even when I synch a couple of hours later. This is incredibally annoying!!!!
