HP Photosmart C4400 series-Won't scan to Mac, but will Scan to Print

I just bought the Snow leopard and this is my first time scanning to my computer...it keeps saying the scanner is not initialized or it will say "sorry, scanner could not be initialized. an error has occurred communication with the scanner." I downloaded the HP Printer Drivers reading that it would help but then said "this volume does not meet the requirements for this update" I am using this for my online classes and I need this scanner ASAP. Please help!

EXACTLY the same problem with an HP PSC 2410 photosmart all-in-one after upgrading to Snow Leopard. Printing still works but no scanning.
I have just wasted 2 hours of my life uninstalling and reinstalling the HP driver and software. I then went to the HP website which said that scanning with this printer is no longer possible with Snow Leopard. It then helpfully redirected me to a webpage where I could purchase a more modern printer! Cheeky b strds!!
From this, it seems they are uninterested in developing a fix to this.
I am very disappointed in Apple for this problem - why didn't they make this clear before the upgrade? Will they pay for a new all-in-one printer for me?!

Hi,

I've got the same problem as you. Using HP software the scanner doesn't work, but I found a workaround. Use Image Capture that comes with snow Leopard (located on the applications folder). You will be able to use the scanner with it. At least with me it works.

I've found that it has a better quality than HP software.

This must be a problem with HP software in snow leopard.

Hope this will help you 🙂

Hiya

OK, I tried using image capture but I couldn't scan text with it so what I did is go to the HP site and downloaded the new driver. The site is a bit pants but if you select any C4400 series printer, i think (dont quote me) that its the same driver anyway. There is 1 driver for tiger lepoards etc and a new one for 10.6.

Anyway I uninstalled my old software and installed the latest software, selected printer etc. Worked a treat. While I didn't want the hassle of this, I scanned the pdf in and tried highlighting the text. Preview works bloody brilliantly. This is going to make life very much easier, Preview picks text up just as it says on the tin. For a dsylexic like me, this is priceless!!!

This problem is INSANE! It's bringing me back to 1998 when you had to buy a printer specifically for MAC and specifically for WINDOWS. I tutor a lot of people with personal filing, etc - and came across this issue with a BRAND NEW deskjet I recommended for purchase. This brand new unit is 3 weeks old and now no longer scans because I upgraded the computer to SL. Same machine, same cord - but it will print only and not scan. Will 10.6.2 have a driver for this? Is HP working on a new driver? It's like I'm re-living the frustrations of the mid 90s again! Absolutely ridiculous!

Dalidrama,

The HP Photosmart C4400 series has had a full installer available for it from [HP.com|http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?softwareitem=o j-74785-1&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&lang=en&os=219&product=3655574] for a while. Download it and you should be set. Also, Snow Leopard includes Print and Scan drivers already, no need to download anything from HP. Once you have your print queue setup through the Print & Fax system preference you can Scan via Preview, Image Capture, or directly from your printer queue.

Just trying to help.

I've got an HP C4480 worked great until I installed Snow Leopard. After installing, it still printed fine, but the ability to scan disappeared. HP had me uninstall and reinstall driver. It fixed the scanning problem, but now I can't print!

Fast forward five or six uninstalls/reinstalls and untold hours of my life, and I've gotten nowhere. Whatever I download from HP is useless, even when it looks successful. Every time I try to download through the automated Apple process I eventually get a prompt that says "Driver Unavailable."

Can anyone help? Please? I'm really tired of dealing with this and have gotten nowhere.
